Hello!
Thanks in advance for your help!
I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
Yesterday morning I did a updated Avira antivir sweep and found that I had 3 detections of TR/Spy.Zbot.PC on my computer in the inbox/trash area of my computer. Spent most of the day cleaning it out and I think did it successfully. What proceeded, though, was strange happenings which made me question whether there was another infection of some sort on the comp. Some of them include: A hidden mystery folder named "癤㩤⼯㩄.lnk" popping up onto the Desktop which wasn't visible and only able to be found by search, which I Erased. Also, a warning screen of "pkzfkh.exe" failing at some point... did a quick search and that doesn't even seem to exist anywhere, on the Net or on my computer! Needless to say I've tried multiple things before posting here. They include:

-Malwarebytes -nothing detected
-Sophos Anti-rootkit free - nothing detected
-GMER (which doesn't give me full access to all the nodes b/c I'm on 64 bit.)
-Autoruns to see what's running and on there
-Catchme.exe which brought up a curious: "detected NTDLL code modification:
ZwEnumerateKey 0 != 47, ZwQueryKey 0 != 19, ZwOpenKey 0 != 15, ZwClose 0 != 12, ZwEnumerateValueKey 0 != 16, ZwQueryValueKey 0 != 20, ZwOpenFile 0 != 48, ZwQueryDirectoryFile 0 != 50, ZwQuerySystemInformation 0 != 51Initialization error"
-- something tells me that's NOT normal
-Mbr.exe from GMER - which gives me:
"device: opened successfully
user: error reading MBR
error: Read The handle is invalid.
kernel: error reading MBR "

-KDSSKiller which didn't find anything

From surfing around I found that this could be evidence of a Rootkit, so I'm asking for help as this is out of my league! Thanks so much for the help as it is really appreciated! Have a great day!
Below is the DDS file and the Attach file (I named it Attach1). Thanks for your help Again!

Ran Defogger and everything was normal (no reboot requested seeing that there was nothing virtual running)
Ran DDS and here's the logs. Kinda wondering what the [<NO NAME>] entry is in the mRun section of the "Pseudo HJT" is? I Took a look at my startups with Autoruns & HJT earlier and nothing came up between those two Adobe Acrobat startups, but in DDS's log that No Name entry does. Kinda wondering what you think. Thanks again! Also, if you have time, I'd LOVE to understand the table with the letters (looks like: ----a-w-) in the "Created Last 30" section means or what it stands for. Thanks!

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hey Gringo,

Stopped everything like you said. When I ran Combofix two pop ups came up, one was Combofixes' startup popup the other was a pop-up saying "Error Win32 only": "Incompatible OS - Combofix only works for workstations with windows 2000 and xp" then it said the same thing in multiple languages underneath the english in the same pop up. I okayed it and when I okayed the Combofix startup popup it ran normally, rebooted and gave this log. PS. I'm not concerned about the LMHosts since I put it there :). Overall, it seems the computer is running normally:

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

Adobe Acrobat

I see that you are using Adobe Acrobat which if fine for editing pdf files but because today’s viruses are using vulnerabilities in older versions of Adobe and because it is easier to update I suggest that you use the free Adobe reader or Foxit reader to view all PDF files

you don't need to uninstall Acrobat, but do use one of these free readers

You can download it from here Adobe free reader
uncheck any of the extra stuff that they offer

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53.5 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing Foxit PDF Reader, be careful not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Clear your Java Cache

  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Clicked TFC, ran fine and rebooted

Opened up MBAM and, saying the database was out of date by 11 days, MBAM asked me if I wanted to update, clicked yes... then this came up "An error has occured. Please report this error code to our
support team. PROGRAM_ERROR_UPDATING (12029, 0, WinHttpSendRequest"... but then I realized that I had to allowed MBAM to talk tot he web via ZoneAlarm and I clicked update button in the update tab and it said that the
database was successfully updated from 6012 to 6125. Performed quick scan, no malicious items found. Once I clicked ok it automatically opened the log (I already had it checked to do that in general
settings) and there was no "show results" or "that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected." part like you said in the instructions,
or anything to click off... just the log... hopefully thats good :)

Installed HJT (although I already had the same version 2.0.4 of it installed in another file path than the one you said on my comp from before, I reinstall from your link) and it installed in Program Files x86/ not the default place you said in your instructions. Then I ran it and
it scanned normally but then the log file popped up with a notepad pop up saying "Cannot fine the C:\Program Files (x86)\Trend Micro\Hijack This\hijackthis.log.file. Do you want to create a new file?" Hit ok and
it just gave me a blank unititled notepad doc. instead of the log file. Did this twice. Then I reasoned that maybe its vbecause the exact same thing is installed twice on the comp .... so I opened the HJT I had already installed on the computer elsewhere than the place the new HJT was and did the same
thing you said to do and the log file came up normally. The log is below underneath the MBAM log.

No problems. Running fine, minus the things Ive said and, also, one small thing; ever since Combofix ran, it seems for certain sites im surfing to, it's either not reaching the server or when it does it's as if the CSS on the site isn't kicking in (case in point, surfing to WSJ.com brings up pure text on one page, then the properly formatted CSS on another.. though WSJ.com is formatting properly as I type this). Sometimes restarting solves it. Sometimes it didn't, but got resolved somehow later. It only happens on a few sites and is nowhere near a
pattern. I was wondering if it could be Combofix or just something random. Again, it's not typical but not overly intrusive and regular, but nothing, outside of the combofix, has changed. Thoughts?

Thanks again!

Ok, update Gringo

That server issue I mentioned is seemingly getting worse/not making sense. I click to a link, any link and it brings up a server not found page in firefox. Even updating firefox is having issues. Is it my firewall? or something else related to Combofix. It's getting quite annoying. Help thanks.

It's seemed to have resolved itself for now. I have read that Firefox has had a bug of that sort so thanks for the help. Back to the main issue at hand though. How are things looking from my logs?

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NetWorx] "C:\Program Files (x86)\NetWorx\networx.exe" /auto
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe_ID0EYTHM] C:\PROGRA~2\COMMON~1\Adobe\ADOBEV~1\Server\bin\VERSIO~2.EXE
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Acrobat Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Acrobat_sl.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Acrobat Assistant 8.0] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Acrotray.exe"

      O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\RunOnce: [mctadmin] C:\Windows\System32\mctadmin.exe (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

NOTE**You can research each of those lines >here< and see if you want to keep them or not

Made the HJT changes and then took the
ESET scan after turning off the antivirs I had running, as well as the firewall (said that it could interfere with the scan)
And it took, like, a millisecond and came back with no threats. Here's the log (I scanned twice b/c I couldn't believe how quick it was)
