TOKYO: A magnitude-8.9 earthquake hit northeastern Japan Friday, generating a tsunami as high as 10 metres that hit the coast of Miyagi prefecture, officials said.

At least six people were killed, 20 injured and many were missing, including a number of children who were sucked into the sea, the public broadcaster NHK reported.

The six deaths were reported at a welfare facility that collapsed in Minami Soma in Fukushima prefecture, and the Kyodo News agency said eight people were missing in a landslide in Fukushima prefecture.

Waves swamped buildings and swept away cars, boats, crops and even buildings. People gathered on the roofs of inundated buildings and houses. Women waved white handkerchiefs from windows, seeking help.

NHK showed footage of submerged vehicles in Kamaishi, Iwate prefecture, as a 4.2-metre tsunami hit the city's coast and of many houses in Sendai, Miyagi prefecture, being washed away by quake-generated waves.

High tsunami waves also hit Hiroo on Hokkaido, Japan's northern island.

The agency warned more waves up to 10 metres high would hit the coast of eastern Japan.

A tsunami advisory was issued in wide swathes of the eastern coast and around the Pacific.

I woke up this morning and seen that on MSN.com and was very saddened by the news! :(

My heart goes out to those who were affected or lost by this tragedy.

This really is a disaster of epic proportions. Aftershocks are still happening. The tsunami is hitting Hawaii now and the West Coast Of the USA is under tsunami warning. Hard to imagine the magnitude to effect half of the world just about :( This is so devastating.

Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight.

Yes I looked at those pics and seen the videos on television. It is very sad to see and watch.

It really brings to mind that we live on such an angry and violent planet.

With flooding from heavy rains, tornadoes, lightening, hurricanes, drought, and now great walls of water coming from an angry sea, it is certainly amazing and yet very shocking to say the least.

I just want the people of Japan to know, I may be far away from the devastation, but I still feel for them as if I was there and suffering to.

Bruce.

At the moment the death toll is over 400 and they expect there's gonna be thousands feared dead. According to my local broadcasting news there a Liberal MP member currently in Japan and about 11000 Australians over in Japan.

Seeing the rubbles being flushed by the flood going anywhere looks very scary, i bet there were bodies in it.
This event just tells us that no matter how advance a country is when nature strikes there's no way of stopping it or seeing it coming.
