Posted 22 October 2004 - 11:46 PM

Our home PC was severely infected and after running AdAware, SpyBot and HijackThis, I think I went a little delete-happy and ended up deleting vital files.

Well, the spyware is gone... but now I cannot connect to the Internet via IE. It keeps saying Cannot Find Server. However, I know that my connection is working because I can connect through Real Player. I even downloaded Mozilla and Mozilla says "The connection was refused when attempting to contact www.mozilla.org"

Thanks for your help!!

I just ran HJT and this is my log:

WestEndCdn, welcome.

Please print this out and follow ALL these directions carefully.

If you insist on running file (music) sharing applications like P2P Networking then you will continually be infected by all kinds of nasties in the downloaded files.
This is the new prefered method of virus/worm/trojan spreaders to get into your system and there will be no detection nor removal capability for days/weeks.
The spreaders count on this time to do their nastieness and create new nasties that are not detected.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it.

You should install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and ALL Critical Updates to help from being continually infected.
In Internet Explorer go to Tools then Windows Updates and install each patch one by one rebooting when necessary.

First to remove the infection and hopefully get the Internet connection working again.

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.

Move HijackThis.exe into this folder as you do not want the HijackThis backup logs
all over your Desktop.

When you run HijackThis from C:\HJT folder by double clicking on it and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary.

Make sure 'show all files' is enabled:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...=&osv=&osv_lvl=

Boot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup.
More detailed instructions here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406

Delete if still present:
C:\WINNT\nths.dll
C:\WINNT\atlez.exe
<== files

C:\WINNT\System32\P2P Networking <== folder

Start HijackThis and tick the boxes next to all these, then close all browser and explorer windows, and tell HijackThis to "Fix checked" if still present.

Reboot and Install the prevention protection below and help your friends from being infected on the Internet.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there.
Index.dat Suite helps with this.
http://support.it-mate.co.uk/?mode=Products&p=index.datsuite

Insure that Index.dat Suite is Setup to empty the Temp folders especially
C:\Documents and Settings\{user}\Local Settings\Temp
then run the Find and create the run.bat and reboot to have it remove what it finds.

{user} is the USR User Account ID.
Removal of infections and prevention protection should be installed on ALL User Account IDS.

Download and install WinPatrol.
http://www.winpatrol.com

Browser settings for increased security:
http://bshagnasty.home.att.net/browsersettings.htm

Install IE-SPYAD then run the install.bat in the ie-spyad folder and SpywareBlaster then keep them up to date as today's Internet is full of nasty infections.

Thanks for your quick reply! I was able to do the first step but cannot seem to find Windows Updates through IE - since I'm not able to connect to the server?

This step:
You should install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and ALL Critical Updates to help from being continually infected.
In Internet Explorer go to Tools then Windows Updates and install each patch one by one rebooting when necessary.

First to remove the infection and hopefully get the Internet connection working again.

Got your message - thanks.

I followed the steps to fix the Winsock problem... and it worked - kind of.

I have a connection :flowers: - but this is now my homepage res://mshp.dll/index.html#44272 and I am not able to access any other pages. I get 'The page cannot be displayed' for any other page I try to access.

Here is my HJT log that I just ran.

WestEndCdn, this is a new CoolWebSearch (CWS) hijack infection and is hard to remove.

Note: Every time you reboot the files multiply and change names. This process is like exterminating cockroaches.

The first thing I need you to do is download getservices.zip from here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/getservices.php

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.

To prepare for infection removal:

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.

Move HijackThis.exe into this folder as you do not want the HijackThis backup logs all over your Desktop.

When you run HijackThis from C:\HJT folder by double clicking on it and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary.

Please download the tool called about:buster from
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip
or
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4289.html

Unzip it to your desktop.

Install the prevention protection below and help your friends from being infected on the Internet.

Install IE-SPYAD then run the install.bat in the ie-spyad folder and SpywareBlaster then keep them up to date as today's Internet is full of nasty infections.
https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

You should install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and ALL Critical Updates to help from being continually infected.
In Internet Explorer go to Tools then Windows Updates and install each patch one by one rebooting when necessary.

You should install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and ALL Critical Updates to help from being continually infected.
In Internet Explorer go to Tools then Windows Updates and install each patch one by one rebooting when necessary.

I'm not sure how to go about doing this.

When I go to IE, tools, I cannot see the Windows Updates that you want me to install?

WestEndCdn, I'm not familiar with Win2K so the menus might be different from WinXP that I am running but I think that it is that you are running IE V5.5 which is quite old.

Update to IE V6.0 SP1 by going to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downlo...p1/default.mspx

You can then take advantage of its upgraded security features.

For Win2K go to the Microsoft site then Windows and look for Updates under Related Sites.

I'll get a Win2K expert to look at the GetServices log.

You may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. Please continue with the next step if you run into a problem with the current one. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you reply.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please download About:Buster from here: About:Buster Download. Once it is downloaded extract it to
c:\aboutbuster. We will use that program later in this process.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode and follow these steps:

Step 1:

Click on start, then control panel, then administrative programs, then services. Look for a service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper. Double click on the that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled.

Step 2:

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:

C:\WINNT\system32\netcb.exe
C:\WINNT\atlez.exe

Step 3:
Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and press the fix button when ready:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://mshp.dll/sp.html#44272
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://mshp.dll/index.html#44272
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = res://mshp.dll/index.html#44272
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://mshp.dll/sp.html#44272
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://mshp.dll/sp.html#44272
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://mshp.dll/index.html#44272
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0A1CC979-0100-E39B-3AE9-CDEE2CB62CFC} - C:\WINNT\winis32.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [atlez.exe] C:\WINNT\atlez.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
ivex/PCAXSetup.cab?
O18 - Protocol: icoo - {4A8DADD4-5A25-4D41-8599-CB7458766220} - C:\WINNT\msopt.dll (file missing)

Step 4:
I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINNT\system32\netcb.exe
C:\WINNT\atlez.exe
C:\WINNT\winis32.dll

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step 5:

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
Save this file on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_O?rtȲ$]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\O?rtȲ$]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_O?rtȲ$]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\O?rtȲ$]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Step 6:

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.

When it completed move on to step 7.

Step 7:
Reboot your computer back to normal mode so that we can restore files that were deleted by this infection:
  • This infection deletes the windows file, shell.dll.

If you are using XP,2000, or NT please download shell.dll from here: shell-dll.zip. Once the file is downloaded uncompress the zip file and copy shell.dll to the following locations (%windir% being the windows or winnt directory):

    %windir%\system32
    %windir%\system

If you are using Windows 98 please download shell.dll from here: shell-dll98.zip. Once the file is downloaded uncompress the zip file and copy shell.dll to the following locations (%windir% being the windows or winnt directory):

    %windir%\system

If you are using Windows ME please download shell.dll from here: shell-dll98.zip. Once the file is downloaded uncompress the zip file and copy shell.dll to the following locations (%windir% being the windows or winnt directory):

    %windir%\system

  • Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.

  • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: SDHelper.zip and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button

  • If you are using Windows 95, 98, or ME it is possible that the malware deleted your control.exe. Please check for the existence of this file by going to to Merijn Files control.exe and examine where the file should be for your operating system. If the file is missing then download the appropriate file and place it in the proper place according to this information.
Step 8:

Run an online antivirus scan at:

http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Reboot and post a last log

I followed everything - thanks! I think it worked  No more spyware...

However, I am still not connecting to the Internet via IE. Still get 'The page cannot be displayed' and 'Cannot find server'.

I am also not able to update Windows. Anytime I try to upgrade to IE6 or anything, I get this message: Access Denied - Network policy settings prevent you from using Windows Update to download and install updates on your computer. If you believe you have received this message in error, please check with your system administrator.

I don't know 'who' to check with since this is a home PC?

Anyway, I ran HJT and this is my latest log:

Log looks clean...great job!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
