There is an ad for spyware in the background on the desktop and we can't get rid of it. When you click on the link, it takes you to Regfreeze.

Any help would be appreciated. Here is the Hijack This log:

You have no active AntiVirus!

Get the free AVG 7 install it, check for updates and run a full scan

AVG 7 - http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

Get all of these and/or verify you have the current versions

SpywareBlaster 3.4 http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpyBot V1.4 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
AdAware SE 1.06 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

DownLoad them (they are free), install them, check each for their
definition updates
and then run AdAware, and Spybot, fixing anything
they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
In SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Thanks for the help...sorry I didn't respond to you sooner.

I downloaded, updated and ran AVG& and Spyware Blaster.

I updated and ran Spybot and AdAware

But I still can't get that thing off the screen!!

When I click on the link, it takes me here: http://www.topadwarereviews.com/?adv=41

The ad is trying to sell me the spyware remover "Regfreeze"...kind of ironic...spyware trying to sell a spyware remover...

Anyway...here is the updated HijackThis log:

DownLoad http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BHOIMPL.DLL

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows\mc-58-12-0000113.exe

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

START – RUN – type in %temp% OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Empty the recycle bin

* Click here to download smitRem.exe.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • It is a self extracting file.
  • Doubleclick the smitRem.exe and it will extract the files to a smitRem folder on your desktop.
  • Do not do anything with it yet. You will run the RunThis.bat file later in safe mode.
* Go here and download Ad-Aware SE.
  • Install the program and launch it.
  • First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now
  • Click Connect and download the latest reference files.
  • Do not run Adaware yet. Just download the updates and have it ready to run later in safe mode.
* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

* Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

* Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

* Now launch Adaware:
  • From main window click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.
  • Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
  • Now to scan just click the Next button.
  • When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.
  • Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next
* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

* Next go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "View my Active desktop as a web page" you should see an entry checked called something like "Security info" or similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the "Delete" button.
Remove the check by "View my Active desktop as a web page".
Click OK then Apply and OK.

* Restart back into Windows normally now.

* Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

Hello there
had a customer prombem exactly the same.
took me 10 hours to work out but its easy to fix.

go to c:/windows and delete either homepage.htm or html
go to c:/windows system 32 and delete bhoimpl.dll

put your wallpaper back and reset your homepage. That annoying shield everytime you open a folder or webpage has gone.

best of luck
