This is somewhat a follow up to this thread of mine that I think I posted on the wrong section:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic384045.html

Anyway, I thought everything was fine seeing as AVG & Malwarebytes found nothing but today, I got two random restarts, I'm not sure though if they were BSODs or not because the event log on event viewer just said that the system was just reset by either pressing CTRL +ALT + DEL or by pressing on the reset button on the machine's casing, two things I absolutely did not.

The first occurred 15 minutes after I initially booted my system & the second an hour & a half after the first one. I've had no other restarts (yet) after...

As quietman7 said on a previous "Help" thread I posted several months ago:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic363598.html/page__p__2035653__fromsearch__1#entry2035653

I should disable the "restart automatically" option whenever a BSOD occurs so I can actually read what went wrong & what needs fixing. However, I'm kind of reluctant to have that setting enabled (or rather disabled) as my keyboard is a USB port type of keyboard & not a PS/2 type. What problem this gives is whenever I press F8 to go into Safe Mode my keyboard gets disabled & pressing the up, down or ENTER Keys do nothing. I can can make the options to appear as the keyboard seems active on POST, but when I get to the startup options the thing no longer responds. I'm worried that if a BSOD does occur & I need to interact with the keyboard to restart the system my keyboard will not allow me & I would not know what to do next. Would resetting the system by pressing the reset button on my box do the thing?

I can get into Safe mode by enabling the option on msconfig though.

I just need your opinion on this guys as Malwarebytes & AVG still sees nothing. I also tried an unline scan with ESET & it found nothing. Super Antispyware also found nothing.

So my question is, were my two random restarts caused by something, maybe that damn koobface worm or not? To be honest I'd been happier if the scans found thousands of virii or malware as that can be fixed, but the absence of any on the scans is annoying. If it might be hardware related, Faulting Power supply or RAM maybe? I'd still rejoice as that too can be easily dealt with.

Anyway, here are my malwarebytes log from today as well as the DDS & GMer log, pursuant to what was on this guide:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html

Also, please forgive me if this thread & this necro post was posted on the wrong section.

Hey guys, I know patience is a virtue but I just like to follow up on my current situation.

I've had another two random restarts today, the first was two hours into my computer usage after I initially booted up today & the second a minute right after the first. It's also odd that I didn't have any random restarts yesterday.

AVG & Malwarebytes still sees nothing:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Please take note:

  • If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.
  • If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • If you are unable to perform the steps we have recommended please try one more time and if unsuccessful alert us of such and we will design an alternate means of obtaining the necessary information.
  • If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.
  • If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
  • Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Best Regards,
oneof4.

Thank you for the reply oneof4 :)

Here are my responses to what you asked for:

1. I'm not sure if things got fixed already as I've done nothing yet, the random restarts have stopped from when I last posted.

2. My OS is Windows XP Home Edition SP3 (32-bit).

3. Yes, I have my Windows XP install DVD here with me.

4. What you asked in item number four (4) is unapplicable as thankfully I can still use this PC with no problems whatsoever.

5. I was on my Facebook account last week when this messenger message from one of my contacts popped up with a link to a video. I was unaware at that time about the koobface worm & I clicked on the link. Only after having clicked on the link & researching about it did I learn that it was a worm that specifically targets social networking sites such as facebook. However, unlike what people who got infected by it are experiencing, I do not experience any of the telltale signs of being infected by the koobface worm. Symptoms which others have are:

a. Their search engine searches gets hijacked &/or redirected to dubious site pages.
b. installation of fake AVS.
C. Slow system performance.

As of yet, I do not experience any of these symptoms.

But I did experience several instances when my system would restart itself twice every other day at random intervals (read my previous posts) up until my last post on this thread about three days ago.

I don't know if it's because of it or not, but the only different thing I did on March 12th was to disable the "automatically reboot" option in the "startup & recovery" option. Also, as I said on my previous posts, I was unsure if those random restarts were caused by a BSoD or not as I did have my system set to automatically reboot if a failure does occur. I also explained my reason why I didn't opt to turn off that setting before because of my keyboard which is USB Based & not PS/2 based. Accessing Safe mode by the F8 method doesn't work for me as the moment the advanced startup options appear by pressing F8 my USB keyboard stops responding & pressing the up &/or down arrow keys as well as the enter key do not work. My only option in going to safe mode is by setting the startup option on msconfig, rebooting then the system goes to safe mode that way.

I have did several scans with AVG & Malwarebytes but both seem to not find any malicious stuff in my system so I decided to post my issue on here to ask for your advice.

By the way, I know I shouldn't have fiddled with stuff on my system until one of you guys asked for specifics but I used this opportunity to uninstall several stuff on my system before I made these logs. I went & uninstalled the NAM (Network Add-on Mod) which is an add-on plugin for SIMCity 4 as well as three of it's supporting add-on plugins namely the RHM (Real Highway Mod), the SAM (Street Addon Mod) & the NWM (Network Widening Mod) as I was not happy with them.

Anyway here are my newer logs:

DDS Attach log has been added as an attachment to this post. Will post a new reply in two or three hours with the GMER Ark.txt log as that's how long the GMER scan takes for my system.

By the way, I used DeFogger as you asked but it didn't see any CD Emulation drivers on my system as stated on the guide that if CD Emulation drivers were found the application will ask for a system reboot for said drivers to be deactivated. What are CD Emulation tools by the way? Do you mean virtual drive applications like Daemon tools? If so, I do not use such tools as the "anti-hacking/cheating" component (INCA nProtect GameGuard)of the MMORPG I play which is Flyff does not permit me to use such tools. Also, since I clicked the "disable" option on DeFogger & it found nothing hence it not asking for a reboot, should I click on re-anble button once all this is over or can I leave it as is?

Hello

My name is gringo and I will be Helping you from this point forward

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes unless I tell you so.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

If you have not done so please Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Here is the first thing I would like you to do.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Thanks for the Assistance Gringo :)

Here are my responses to what Gringo was asking for at the end of his post:

Log from Combofix
The ComboFix Log you asked for has been attached to this reply.

It seems to have not found nasty stuff on my system though as it did not ask for a reboot.

let me know of any problems you may have had
AVG (AVG 9 to be exact) was being a pain to uninstall. I had to uninstall it as ComboFix reported it can not function if AVG was still active even after I had disabled it for this scan. Incidentally, I do know that that a lot of people have left AVG because their recent products tend to bloat one's system a lot. In this regard I think I shall go for Avast! for now as several swear by it.

How is the computer doing now?
I haven't fully "explored it yet, so I can't tell right away. I'll report back in a day or two to let you know unless something does come up.

Again thanks to your help guys :)

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

FBI Cyber Education Letter
File sharing infects 500,000 computers
USAToday
infoworld

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

1. click on start
2. then go to settings
3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add/remove programs
click on the following programs

Adobe Reader 8.2.6

and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.
[/list]
Clear your Java Cache

  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)

  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

OK, I have attached he logs from Malwarebytes & Hijackthis along with this post as you requested.

About what you said regarding P2P. The only P2P Application I have on this system that I know of is utorrent, however seeing as I haven't used it for over a year now I decided to remove it just now as I was doing these new set of instructions you gave me.

Performance wise, I now notice this thing starts up, really, really fast. So fast that it gets to the desktop even before the Windows Startup audio (that tune Windows plays when it's logged on/turned on) track could get a chance to play. At first I thought the startup audio was turned off but after like 2 or 3 seconds from reaching the desktop (after the Windows Welcome screen goes away) the startup audio would then play. I've experience no issues so far though.

Oh & I'm using Avast! as my AV now.

OK, ESET Online Scanner log has been attached to this post.

Of the things you specified that I can remove from startup on the Hijackthis instructions I've left out Yahoo! Messenger as that one I do use a lot. As for the others I've always wondered if I could have them turned off and thanks to you, now I know I can.

Also, can I ask you the same question I asked oneof4 when he posted on this topic regarding using DeFogger to disable CD Emulation on this system. Upon using DeFogger to disable any CD Emulation drivers the application seems to have not found any on my computer as the app did not ask for a reboot for the drivers to be disabled. So my question was, after this cleanup process should I use DeFogger again to reanable any drivers on my system or should I just let it be for now?

Also, what are CD Emulation applications? Are they things like Daemon tools which is a virtual Drive that reads/loads ISO files? If that's what they are then as I said on that post where I asked the question I do not have such applications on here.

Oh & should I keep the tools you guys had me download, ComboFix, DDS, GMER, TFC or should I delete 'em afterwards?

And again thanks for the assistance :)

That is exactly what they are and if you don't have them then you don't need to rerun it again

Very well done!! This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware - Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are.

The following procedure will implement some cleanup procedures. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points and create a new restore point. It will also remove all the backups our tools may have made.

Any programs and logs that are left over you can just be deleted from the desktop. TFC is a free temp file cleaner that is very easy to use, I would keep this and use before you do any scans or when you want to free up some space.

:Uninstall ComboFix:

  • turn off all active protection software
  • push the "windows key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • please copy and past the following into the box ComboFix /Uninstall and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.

:remove tools:

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop. This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
  • If asked to restart the computer, please do so
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

:clear system restore points:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • choose your root drive (normally C:)
  • after it calculates how much space you will save it will open up a new window
  • Select the More options tab at the top of the window
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
  • go back to the disk clean up tab
  • put a checkmark in all - except compress old files (leave this unchecked)
  • click Ok then click yes
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created and clean unneeded files

:Make your Internet Explorer more secure:

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Make sure your applications have all of their updates

It is also possible for other programs on your computer to have security vulnerability that can allow malware to infect you. Therefore, it is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector

:Turn On Automatic Updates:

Turn On Automatic Updates
1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them

If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. To pause or to resume the download, right-click the icon, and then click Pause or Resume. When the download is completed, another message appears in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation. If you choose not to install at that time, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.

or visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

:antispyware programs:

I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly:

  • WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. We used this to help clean your computer and recomend keeping it and using often.

Again, thanks for all your help Gringo. I have followed all of your instructions up 'til the ones about flushing out system restore as after OTCleanit performed the necessary reboot I found that system restore was already disabled upon reboot so I just had to re-enable it & follow the steps again & made my new restore point.

Everything's going well so far & if ever something does come up I shall post again here on bleepingcomputer.com either on this thread or I'll start a new thread.
