Posted 06 March 2011 - 02:45 AM

So I got a nice piece of snail mail today from my ISP (Insight Communications) saying that I have a botnet and that I will have my internet disabled if I don't remedy the problem. I have 3 computers on my network (2 of which are used very regularly, and 1 that's not). I have run Spybot, Malwarebytes, and Avast 6 on all of them and nothing has shown up. I'm fairly certain that 2 of the computers on my network are in very good shape but if there is one that's got something wrong with it it's this one. It's a Dell laptop that the university provided my wife with. Ever since she's gotten it I've thought there has been something slightly 'off' about it. It's a newish laptop (less than 6 months old) but it runs incredibly slow all the time. Virtual Memory Low errors occur on a nearly daily basis on it, and the internet periodically just doesn't work on it despite all other devices and computers on the home network working just fine. So either the computer is a piece of junk and the ISP notification was a false alarm...or the laptop is infected with something. Hope you can help and hope I did everything correctly.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system. [/b]
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Sorry it took me a few days to respond. I stopped checking the site every day for a response cause it took so long but I understand and I saw how long the average response time was so I wasn't overly worried. Thanks for finally getting to me. I haven't done anything to the computer since I last posted here but here are the new things you've asked for. Let me know what else you need/want. I have subscribed so I can hopefully respond in a more prompt manner. I haven't done anything on this computer except done all of the Window's updates and ran the Symantec antivirus that was provided with the computer. I also have installed Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and have run that as well. Nothing but tracking cookies have ever been picked up by anything. The computer is just not reliable and since I got the letter from my ISP I can only suspect it's this laptop that's the culprit. Thanks again.

Hi,

I am currently not seeing much in your logs. Please run a scan with Rootkit Unhooker too:
Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • extract RKUnhooker to your desktop
Note** it is zipped up in a .rar file - If you do not have a program to unzip this type of file
you can get a free one from here - http://www.7-zip.org/
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

"just click on Cancel, then Accept".

Did the letter say which botnet you were supposedly a part of? There are a number of other reports taht I have seen, where people say they received the same notification without being infected. It is hard to find out why they were taking action.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

The letter did not say anything more than I had been infected with a botnet virus and when I called the support person was no more helpful than the letter I had been sent. All the guy on the phone was able to tell me was that they use some third party company who analyzes all the data and reports to them who has a virus or whatever and that they then send out the letter. He couldn't give me any more information than was provided by the letter. As I said, I had dome everything I knew of to check all the computers on my home network and nothing has cropped up but this computer has always been a little wonky (I suspect hardware issues, honestly) so I thought it was possible this was infected with something that I just wasn't able to figure out or find. Thanks again for helping.

Also, when I opened the RKU program I got this warning upon opening:
Warning! Windows reports DIFFERENT kernel module name than actually is!
Rku will now forced to use kernel mode detected by Rku hardware scan!
However Rku results and work can be compromised!

Not sure if that's normal or what but I figured I'd post it here just in case it wasn't normal.

Hi,

I am suspecting this to be related to your anti virus program, there already was heavy interference showing in the other rootkit scan.

The feedback I am seeing on the internet would lead me to believe that you are not the only that got this letter wrongly. Just to be safe, pelase run a scan with Eset as a final check:

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Posted Image

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Posted Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

Hi,

you can empty your temporary java files as follows:
Clear the Java cache:
  • Go to Start -> Control Panel.
  • In the Control Panel, double-click the Java icon.
    • The Java Control Panel appears.
  • Click Settings... under "Temporary Internet Files".The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
  • Click Delete Files...The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
  • Click OK on the Delete Temporary Files window.
NOTE: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache!
  • Click OK on the Temporary Files Settings window.
  • Close the Java Control Panel.

You can also view these instructions along with screenshots here.

I am not seeing any indication of infection on your PC. If you want to be 100% sure that you're clean I'd still consider a reformat, but I'm 99.9% sure that the letter you got from your ISP was wrong. If it wasn't it most likely regards a different PC than this one.

regards myrti

Well, I appreciate all you did for me. I suspected that the mail was sent erroneously or it was this computer. I guess it could still be the other computer on our home network but I don't feel like it is. If I get another letter I suppose I'll be back here posting another thread for the other computer but I won't worry about it now. Thanks again. Is there anything else I should do?

Hi,

yes I'd like you to remove the tools we used.. If you need to come back it would be preferable that you download them anew, as they will have been updated

Read those last few lines, in order to keep your pc safe and clean:
Please do the following to clean up your PC:
  • Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
    • Download OTC from the following mirror and save it to your desktop:
    • Double click on Posted Image
    • Push the large "Cleanup" button.
    • Allow your system to reboot.
  • If OTC faild to remove all programs from your Desktop, please delete the rest manually.
Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:
  • Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing :(.
