Hello, I have been trying off and on for weeks to remove the google redirect virus. I always have Mcafee security suite and windows defender going and have tried various combinations of tdsskiller, malwarebytes, and ccleaner. No luck. As far as I know the redirect is the only symptom - no slow computer, crashes, etc.

Below is the dds file.

Hello,

Apologizes for the delay.

It looks like you have a Firefox infection. Your computer doesn't look to be infected too badly. We'll update some programs in this post as well as run a few additional scans.

GooredFix
Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

Running OTM

We need to execute an OTM script
  • Please download OTM by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Paste the following code under the Posted Image area. Do not include the word "Code".
    :Processes

    echo,Y|cacls "%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" /G everyone:f /c
    ipconfig /flushdns /c
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [resethosts]
    [createrestorepoint]

  • Push the large Posted Image button.
  • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Copy/Paste the contents under the Posted Image line here in your next reply.
  • If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:

Thanks for the help.

I hit a problem. My reboot after the OTM hung on the 'Shutting down' screen so I had to do a hard shutdown.

I kept going and then the the reboot after the JAVA installation was fine up to the point where I logged into the system. I put in my password and got he message:

'The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.'

So at the moment I have a dead computer. Do you have a suggestion for getting past the login?

Hi SweetTech,

Not sure what the cause was but I have it fixed. The microsoft knowledge base had a fix to get in through safe mode and changing the .bak profile to the main one. I am back on track. I am now proceeding with the Malwarebytes and eset scan.

Thanks

Would you recommend Chrome instead of firefox? I know this redirect was happening in IE as well but never tried Chrome.

Was the system more compromised than a redirect?

Thanks

Hi freeze_eng,

How are things running?

I'd recommend Chrome over Firefox as it's what I am currently using on my own system.

When ESET has finished run this scan for me please:

Re-Running OTL

We need to create a New FULL OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from here if you have not done so already:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Change the "Extra Registry" option to "SafeList"
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
