Hello,

Helping out a friend where the problem started out innocently enough but now it's 'fatal'. Here is the history:

My friend called me with the "System Tool" virus. I followed instructions posted within Bleeping Computer and was successful in cleaning up the problem. That's when the trouble got worse. His son downloaded BitDefender and receive the following:
STOP: c0000021a {Fatal system error} ....... status of 0xc0000034 (0x00000000 0x00000000)

So I went with ERD commander and was able to use a restore point and get the PC back up and running, but I had to once again erradicate the System Tool virus. After another clean, and with my friend not having any virus protection, I downloaded AVG Free. It installed OK and once the scan started running, I kept getting messages from AVG Resident Shield about multiple trojans (unfortunately I don't recall the names)that could not be cleaned. I ran Malwarebytes again which showed no infections and I also ran ESET online scanner, which showed one infection, but not the ones AVG was indentifying.

Once the AVG scan completed, we attempted to reboot the PC again and are now back at the BSOD c0000021a error, and no restore point will work to get through it. I know that error indicates a rebuild, but I have worked with your great community in the past and have resolved the problem.

Using Knoppix, I have been able to get the MalwareBytes log from when I removed System Tool the 2nd time. That is all I have to go on for now. Know I can get to the hard drive using Knoppix if I need to provide anything else.

Please help me. Thanks again for all your hard work.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Please take note:

  • If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.
  • If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • If you are unable to perform the steps we have recommended please try one more time and if unsuccessful alert us of such and we will design an alternate means of obtaining the necessary information.
  • If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.
  • If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
  • Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Casey

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

Thank you for responding. I completely understand the delay when it comes to infections and cleanup.

I am still unable to start the computer, as I receive an C000021a fatal error. The PC is running Windows XP SP3 and even though I do not have the original CD, I do have a slipstreamed copy of XP SP3.

Error is the same when I start the PC either in Normal Mode, Safe Mode, or attempt to start with last known good configuration:

STOP: c0000021a {Fatal system error} ....... status of 0xc0000034 (0x00000000 0x00000000)

Based on the error and BSOD, I am unable to provide you with any logs.

I do have a copy of Reatogo-X-PE if that will help get us started. Can I copy the above mentioned scan programs to the desktop it creates and get the information you need ? Let me know what you would like me to do.....

Hello, mat58.
My name is etavares and I will be helping you with this log.

Here are some guidelines to ensure we are able to get your machine back under your control.

  • Please do not run any unsupervised scans, fixes, etc. We can work against each other and end up in a worse place.
  • Please subscribe to this topic if you have not already done so. Please check back just in case, as the email system can fail at times.
  • Just because your machine is running better does not mean it is completely cleaned. Please wait for the 'all clear' from me to say when we are done.
  • Please reply within 3 days to be fair to other people asking for help.
  • When in doubt, please stop and ask first. There's no harm in asking questions!

Step 1

Let's build another bootable environment that will allow our tools to scan. I do have one tool that will work with that environment, but we'd have to spend a bunch of time changing a few things around so it's easier to just build a new one. Do you have a flash drive we can use?

Try this please. You will need a USB drive.

Download http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-xpud-windows-latest.exe & http://noahdfear.net/downloads/bootable/xPUD/xpud-0.9.2.iso to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Insert your USB drive
  • Press Start > My Computer > right click your USB drive > choose Format > Quick format
  • Double click the unetbootin-xpud-windows-387.exe that you just downloaded
  • Press Run then OK
  • Select the DiskImage option then click the browse button located on the right side of the textbox field.
  • Browse to and select the xpud-0.9.2.iso file you downloaded
  • Verify the correct drive letter is selected for your USB device then click OK
  • It will install a little bootable OS on your USB device
  • Once the files have been written to the device you will be prompted to reboot ~ do not reboot and instead just Exit the UNetbootin interface
  • After it has completed do not choose to reboot the clean computer simply close the installer
  • Next download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/driver.sh to your USB
  • Remove the USB and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer
  • Press F12 and choose to boot from the USB
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Remove the USB drive and insert back in your working computer and navigate to report.txt

Please note - all text entries are case sensitive
Copy and paste the report.txt for my review

I'm working on the log now. In the meantime in building the bootable OS on the USB drive, I lost my profile and my peripheral devices on my PC. Do I open another problem ticket or can you help me fix this ?
It asked me to reboot after building the boot disk, I said no. Then it came back with a message about the program not finishing normally. I cancelled and then lost my mouse and keyboard (wireless device connected via USB). I rebooted and it build a new desktop. I know that means that I lost my profile (with all my e-mail files, etc).

UPDATE on Profile: Appears that the Wireless Receiver blew for some unknown reason. Purchased a new one. Rebooted PC and Profile re-appeared. No loss of files. Ignore

Log will be in my next post

Hello, mat58.

Very odd, but at least everything working now. I do see two rootkit files in there. Two more scans to confirm how deep you're infected. In the interim, you can access your files through xPud or Reatogo, just scan them before using.

I want to look for an MBR rootkit so we'll dump the MBR. Those have been pretty common lately. In the second step, we're looking at two files that result in that BSOD.

Once we get a clear picture, we'll start attacking the issue.

Step 1

Try this please. You will need a USB drive.

  • Boot from the flash drive again.
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Copy/paste the following command and press enter:

    dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr.txt bs=512 count=1
  • When done a file, mbr.txt, will be created on your USB drive. Please attach that file to your reply.

Please note - all text entries are case sensitive

Step 2

  • While still in xPud:
  • Click on File
  • Expand mnt
  • Expand your USB (sdb1)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh.
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh -f
  • Press Enter
  • You will be prompted to input a filename.
  • Type the following:

    explorer.exe

  • Press Enter
  • If succesful, the script will search this file.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as filefind.txt
  • Rename that to findexplorer.txt.
  • Repeat the steps above, but this type type csrss.exe instead of explorer.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as filefind.txt
  • Rename that to findcsrss.txt.

Please note - all text entries are case sensitive

Please attach mbr.bin and copy/paste the two find attachments for explorer.exe and csrss.exe.

OK, this may explain why you're getting that BSOD. It appears your explorer.exe is missing. This can happen if it's patched by malware (typicaly Bamital) and a virus scan detects and eliminates it without replacing it.

Please look for /mnt/sda2/WINDOWS/explorer.exe
Is it there? I'm guessing no since it's not in the filefind report.

If that's the case, please copy (you can right-click on the icon)
/mnt/sda2/WINDOWS/ServicePackFiles/i386/explorer.exe

and paste it here by right-clicking in the background and selecting paste.
/mnt/sda2/WINDOWS/

Then, try to boot normally. Can you get into Windows?

The file was not there, so I did the copy and paste. Still receiving the c0000021a error.

Winlogon is likely missing too...Bamital infects both. Please run the same file find search in Step 2 of post #7 above, but search for winlogon.exe at the prompt.

Hello, mat58.

Good news!

So, to confirm, you did have to replace winlogon.exe? Since it's pretty apparent you had a Bamital infection that your antivirus caught (but blue screened...pretty common), I need to give you the backdoor warning. If hte A/V caught it right away, not too much harm done, likely.

If you choose to continue to clean, please run OTL so I can see the current state of your system. We'll likely have more to deal with.

Backdoor Warning
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you do decide to proceed, please continue with the fix below.

Step 1

We need to create an OTL report,
  • Please download OTL from this link.
  • (If that link doesn't work, try this alternate link
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Select "Use Safelist" under "Extra Registry"
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

  • Click the Quick Scan button.
  • The scan should take a few minutes.
  • Please copy and paste both logs in your reply. If they are too big to paste in one reply, please split them into separate posts.

I would like to continue to clean the PC. I hopefully will get to it within the next 24 hours and post the logs.
To answer your initial question, I did have to restore the winlogon.exe file.

The PC has been disconnected from the internet per your instructions.

NOTE: I am also unavailable March 17 - 20.
