I have run most of the free antivirus programs attempting to have it check for viruses on my USB drive without running a complete check on my hard drive. Any advice??

I inherited a number of 'flash drives' that I want to check for viruses. I only want to check the flash drives, I don't want to run the antivirus program on the computers hard drive (c:) I found the answer to my problem!!!! A whack on the side of my head did it!!

Just a quick FYI:

Almost all anti-virus programs allow you to scan a particular location, in this case the Flash drive.

In fact, some programs integrate the Scan option in the right-click menu. So all you need to do is select the drive, right-click and choose "Scan with...". :)
