I have a Dell Optiplex GX620 2.80 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4,16 kilobyte primary memory cache
1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache with 2 gigs of ram, running windows xp service pack 3. I have two user accounts and the adminstrator account. Both user accounts have administrative rights. My boyfriend got a rogue antivirus pop up. I think it was win xp antivirus 2011 or something similar. I shut down the computer and logged in safe mode to the administrator account.

I updated and ran malwarebytes. It found one trojan which it removed. I scanned with super antispyware and it only found a lot of tracking cookies. i could not open microsoft security essentials from the admin account. I tried to go to the internet and it asked me what program I wanted to use to open the file with. I am not able to open any programs from the administrator accout.

I restarted it in normal mode and logged into my user. I tried to go to microsoft update and it told me it could not download because the automatic update, backgound file transfer (or something similar)and the event log services were turned off. I turned them on and set them to automatic and was able to run the program and download and install the required updates.
I then went to the ESST site and ran their scanner and found nothing.

I orginally posted in the "Am I infected forum" but have not received a reply. My link This is the link to my original topic. I have asked that that topic be closed. I am still only able to use the one user account. I am unable to open anything in the other accounts. When I click on any program, or the internet the window pops up asking what program to use to open the file. The virus protection is not running in those accounts either. but when I scan from my user nothing is found.

I downloaded the DDS and tried to run it but when I click on it a page with a bunch of code opens. It downloads as an autocad script file. I do not know if that is causing the problem or not. I was able to download GMER and run the scan but I don't think it found anything either. I did have to run it a couple of times. I went to bed while it was still scanning and in the morning I had a blue screen of death that said "Kernal_Data_Inpage_Error". I restarted the computer and reran the GMER and have attached the ark.text file.

Although I am still able to use my user account, in the week since my first post I did get one rouge antivirus pop up, which I immediately closed by the "x" . I was able to update malwarebytes. I ran it and it found one trojan which was sucessfully removed. Today Windows Media player keeps opening up as I am trying to type this post and I don't know why.

I am afraid that the infection is not gone and soon I won't be able to use my account either. I would appreciate any help you can give me on how to remove the infection and repair my registry. Thank you.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Please take note:

  • If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.
  • If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • If you are unable to perform the steps we have recommended please try one more time and if unsuccessful alert us of such and we will design an alternate means of obtaining the necessary information.
  • If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.
  • If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
  • Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Best Regards,
oneof4.

Hi again,

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Driver::
Sweser

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard is not supported anymore and should be uninstalled.

Uninstall your current Adobe shockwave player and get the fresh one here if needed.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 24.
  • Click the
    Download
    button to the right.
  • Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
    Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u24-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Uncheck Carbonite online backup trial if it's offered there.

* Go here to run an online scanner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is not checked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish.

Post back its report, a fresh dds.txt log and above mentioned ComboFix resultant log. Any issues left?

I saved the CFScript and dragged it on top of the ComboFix icon as per your instructions, when the window opened it said a newer version of COmbofix was available and did want to use that. I said yes and it downloaded something before it ran. I hope that was the right thing to do since the instructions did not address this. Anyway here is the log:

I completed all the other steps except uninstalling Adobe Acrobat 6.0 standard, I still use this program and it still gets updates. I unistalled and updated the Adobe Shockwave and the Java following your steps. I then ran the ESET scanner but it found no threats and did not produce a report.

Here is the new DDS log:

============= FINISH: 20:21:56.03 ===============

Since I wasn't having any issues in this user I logged off to check the other user account and it is no longer there. I did log into the administrative account through safe mode and I was able to access the internet and open programs so that issue seems to be fixed. It really does not matter if the other account has been deleted as long as my user account is in good working order.

Thank you so much for your help and I will look for your next response. :thumbup2:

Hi,

Did you try to access the other account via normal mode too? It wasn't available there either?

The other user account (not the administrator acct) was just gone, I checked in the control panel, user accounts and it is not there either. But I don't mind that it is gone. It was the account my boyfriend used to check his mail and I am sure that it was his user that got infected. His internet use is questionable... The administrator account is only available from safe mode that I know of.

Hi,

You may want to create limited account for your boyfriend :) More information about differences between admin and limited user account in XP can be read here.

Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double-click it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click ok
  • Download and run Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) and fix its findings.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free or Comodo Firewall Pro (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation Install Comodo HopSurf.., Make Comodo my default search provider and Make Comodo Search my homepage and install firewall ONLY!). Both providers have support forums that help with configuration related questions.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade B)

My computer seems to be running fine. As I mentioned before I was not having any problems other than an occasional rogue software popup. Did I have rootkit infection? I think the problems came from the other user accounts. I am going to use a BIOS password and keep others off from now on.

What is "behind NAT?" The firewall built into a liksys router doesn't count?

I reset the system restore, uninstalled combo fix, updated windows and office, and checked my internet settings which were already set as you suggested. I will check out the third party sites you recommended as well.

Thank you so much for your help fixing my computer. Your time and knowledge is greatly appreciated. :busy:

You're welcome :)

Did I have rootkit infection?

No sign of one in those logs.

What is "behind NAT?" The firewall built into a liksys router doesn't count?

NAT = network address translation. That router combination works fine.
