Posted 02 March 2011 - 02:27 PM

I started getting lots of these things. When I do get them massively my internet becomes slower, sometimes leading to "no connection" and wireless signal is halfway slower.

I noticed that I sarted getting spam in my Gmail inbox (usually 1 per day), its strange because im using Gmail for a couple of years now and these are the first spam that I've got directly to my inbox.

Some other things I noticed (might not be a problem) like the internet connection icon, properties (running windows xp sp3) doesnt show it "firewalled" like it used to, and there are lots of sent packets (almost as much sent packets as received)

Router logs:

Could this be a threat or just some bogus with the router? I mean it doesn't happen often that internet crashes but when it does I cant even access the router, need to disable connection in control panel and then enbale it... But still if not ip spoofing then theres "Smurfs" or "Lands" all the time.

To be honest the logs dont make sense. I assume 192.168.1.1 is your router?

What the logs are saying is that your router is sending packets to the IP broadcast address of 255.255.255.255, which is essentially your local network.

Is the router attempting to do some sort of discovery for services on your network?

Well my gateway is 192.168.1.2 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0 so Im clueless of what that ip is. Im now starting to think that its the other router TP-Link that is connected to a satelite receiver and gets internet wirelessly from the Philips. But still the gateway for that is 192.168.0.1 and there weren't anything like this before with it.

About the services theres the router with the sat receiver and a laptop connected and I'm not running anything with my pc. Mainly skype/msn, and browse the web.

EDIT: Just noticed, internet starts lagging, and then I suddenly get a spam message to both Gmail account and MSN inbox. But looked at the logs no spoofing or anything at the moment.

Yeah, i think the spam is unrelated. I think the priority right now is finding out what device has an ip of 192.168.1.1

Ok I found it, its TP-links factory ip address. But it doesnt make sense as i access it through 192.168.0.1 because its configured as a switch/hub (dont know how its called) and in its logs there werent any problems connecting to my router.

No spoofing as of yesterday, but the internet freezes from time to time, and or skype, or msn (or both) loses connection, then reconnects again. Seems like something is clogging the internet, but no more garbage in the log while before there were dozens of it constantly (lands, smurfs, spoofs)

One thing I did a couple of days ago is disabled UPNP, maybe thats gotta do with something...

To see whats going on with your network, YOu amy want to install a program called wireshark and let it sniff your network. You can then examine the data and see what ips are sending the most and try to narrow it down from there.

I've messed around with the program a bit but don't understand how to identify/filter? the packets and such. There are lots of them and all different in color, lots of yellows, grey, several red ones. So how do I know what to do with them? I saved a log with ~700 packets, should I post it here?

What is 192.168.1.222? It is sending an awful lot of UDP packets to a lot of different IP addresses?

I assume its your machine? I should have mentioned that in order to see traffic fro the other devices on your network they would all have to be plugged into a hub.

Yes, 192.168.1.222 is my static ip, is it normal for that lot of packets to be sent? I don't think my pc is related to any of the devices as they go through the router directly to the internet, am I correct?

As for the hub you mean I should connect the laptop and such to 1 router for them to be lan all at the same time? I don't quite understand what a hub is.
