Last Saturday my computer got infected with "antispyware antivirus 2011" followed one of the tutorials for removal and got it out of the system. However Microsoft essential would not operated and the Firewall kept being turned Off. Removed MSE and installed Avast! and it found and removed some virus then re-ran Malwarebytes and it cleaned a few more. Since then I still get random redirects and Avast has identified a Rootkit(hidden boot sector)but can not remove it. Also Avast keeps advising about a threat from 199.80.55.19 address with a Process SYSTEM32\SVChost.exe.

Followed the prep guide and have run Defogger, DDS and tried GMER multiple times but it just hangs - tried once in safe mode with networking with the same results. Needed to force a shutdown and reboot. So unable to provide log for GMER

Thanks in advance for your help.

Dawg64,

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • These instructions have been specifically tailored to your computer and the issues you are experiencing with your computer. It's important to note that these instructions are not suitable for any other computer, even if the issues are fairly similar.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Posted Image One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan and password stealer.

This type of infection allows hackers to access and remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it contains any other sensitive information, then from a clean computer, change all passwords where applicable.
It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to appraise them of your situation.

I highly suggest you take a look at the two links provided below:
1. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
2. When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

ST, firstly thanks for your help, judging by the volume in the forum business is brisk.

1. all the tasks have been completed and the logs are attached below.

2. Log on was about the same - slowish. So far there have been no alerts from Avast and there have been no redirects or random opening of new web pages. And I was able to get to the Microsoft update page - which I was unable to to before. I did not load any updates.

3. This computer is only used for photo editing and Web browsing and other non-financial activity now. However having said that this was used for our banking with in the past six months - is it posible to determine when the virus may have been placed?

Is there any chance since this is on a home network that the virus can be spread to the other computer?

Again thanks... Doug

Hello Doug,

2. Log on was about the same - slowish. So far there have been no alerts from Avast and there have been no redirects or random opening of new web pages. And I was able to get to the Microsoft update page - which I was unable to to before. I did not load any updates.

That's great news! I am always glad to hear my users reporting that. :)

However having said that this was used for our banking with in the past six months - is it posible to determine when the virus may have been placed?

It's very difficult for me to determine that. The best answer I could provide you with is around the same time you started noticing issues with your computer.

The snippet below is the main infection you were infected with:

2011/02/28 18:16:58.0062 1756 Detected object count: 1
2011/02/28 18:17:06.0812 1756 \HardDisk0 - will be cured after reboot
2011/02/28 18:17:06.0812 1756 Rootkit.Win32.TDSS.tdl4(\HardDisk0) - User select action: Cure
2011/02/28 18:17:14.0125 0832 Deinitialize success

It was the cause of you not being able to update Windows, as well as the redirects.

I see some things in your OTL log that we will need to address with a fix.

In your next reply please advise me on how your computer is currently running.

ST, glad you have to read those logs foreign language to me.

All went well both the OTL and MBAM ran with-out incident: LOGS ATTACHED BELOW

Computer still seems slow on log in and there is a pause (temporary screen goes black then in a second or two continues) during the initial Windows XP screen and the "Welcome to windows" screen. Not sure if this pause was always there.
The other observation was a quick flash- as if a window opened and the immediately closed as the desktop was being populated.

There continues to be no redirects or alarms from AVAST.

Here are the logs:

Doug,

ST, glad you have to read those logs foreign language to me.

They aren't that bad are they? ;)

Are you able to read what it says, by any chance?

ST, The ghost window that I reported in the last msg did not appear today on login. Yesterday it was so fast that there was no reading allowed... :)

Unable to run ESET as I get an Internet explorer error shutting down the window

Message reads
Internet explore has closed this web page to protect your computer. A malfunctoning or malicicous add on has caused IE to close this web Page.

It seem related to Data execution prevention... I do not know how to override?

I have not run the other program as of yet.

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky Online Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. Click HERE to see how to disable the most common antivirus programs.
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.

The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take quite a long time to download.
  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, adware, dialers, and other riskware
    • Archives
    • E-mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View report... at the bottom.
  • Click the Save report... button.

ST, computer seems to be running better it access the internet fast for email and web browing in general. The redirects are gone and there are no continuing threats be found by Avast.

Found out how to turn of the Data Execution Protection. It was under Internet tools> advanced > security >unchecked the "Enable memory protection to help mitigate online activities" and then ESET was able to run.

There was not threats found and I was not given the opportunity to create a list of found threats. Maybe I did something wrong. So I clicked uninstall and finish. Let me know if this was correct?

Here is the log for the security check

Dawg64,

Your logs are looking good. We will update Adobe Reader in this post, and I will grab one final OTL log to be sure your clean.

Found out how to turn of the Data Execution Protection. It was under Internet tools> advanced > security >unchecked the "Enable memory protection to help mitigate online activities" and then ESET was able to run.

That's good to know.

There was not threats found and I was not given the opportunity to create a list of found threats. Maybe I did something wrong. So I clicked uninstall and finish. Let me know if this was correct?

That was fine.

Update Adobe Reader
Earlier versions of Adobe Reader have known security flaws so it is recommended that you update your copy
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  • Remove ALL instances of Adobe Reader
  • Re-boot your computer as required.
  • Once ALL versions of Adobe Reader have been uninstalled, visit: <<here>> and download the latest version of Adobe Reader
Alternative Option: after uninstalling Adobe Reader, you could try installing Foxit Reader from >here< Foxit Reader has fewer add-ons therefore loads more quickly.

NEXT:

OTL Custom Scan

We need to run an OTL Custom Scan
  • Please reopen Posted Image on your desktop.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rs

  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.

All Clean Speech

===> Make sure you've re-enabled any Security Programs that we may have disabled during the malware removal process. <===

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

Updated Anti-Virus Program
It's essential that you have an updated anti-virus program running on your computer. You don't want to run more than one as it can cause program conflicts, as well as false positives

You can view an excellent list of Free Security Software programs that has been compiled by GeekstoGo.

Avoid P2P Programs

Remember that no matter how clean the program you're using for peer-to-peer filesharing may be, it offers no guarantees regarding the cleanliness of files you may choose to download. All files available via p2p filesharing carry a high risk, particularly those that offer you illegitimate methods of using legitimate software programs without paying for them. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer and Risks of File-Sharing Technology.

If you have any of these programs installed then I highly suggest you uninstall them.

NOTE: Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Internet Browsers

Many of the users that I assist here on the forums, ask me which programs they can use to prevent themselves from getting infected again in the future. The best answer I can give you is too practice safe browsing.

Please consider using an alternative browser such as Google Chrome or Opera. They are both much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also have great built-in pop-up blockers.

I also suggest you make your Internet Explore more secure.

Make Internet Explorer more secure

  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Extra Goodies

  • It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection. Refer to this Microsoft article
Strong passwords: How to create and use them
then consider a password keeper, to keep all your passwords safe.
  • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
  • You should run an updated scan with MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware weekly. Instructions are included below:

    • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Check for Updates

  • Be weary of e-mails from unknown senders. Keep the following in mind as well: If it's to good to be true, then it more than likely is.

  • FileHippo Update Checker is an extremely helpful program that will tell you which of your programs need to be updated. Its important to keep programs up to date so that malware doesn't exploit any old security flaws.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
    • Green to go
    • Yellow for caution
    • Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for Chrome and Opera.
  • Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.
  • In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:
    Think Prevention.
PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?.
**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Please respond one last time so we can consider the thread resolved and close it, thank-you.

Cheers,
SweetTech.

ST, I can not thank you enough, for your time in helping resolve this problem. I only wish all IT help was a professional as you have been.

That window that opened/could not read was something called WINIRXHELPER... the last login it stayed open but was empty no idea what it wanted me to do ??

I will look at the two other browsers as possible replacements for IE.

I have included the last log as requested

========== COMMANDS ==========
Restore points cleared and new OTL Restore Point set!

OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.22.2 log created on 03022011_184616

Again thanks a lot since this looks like our last contact
