It says it needs a system restore and it wont let me do it.
It gives me points(dates) to restore to, but then comes back and says couldn't restore, try another date, then same thing!
I have attached a log that may or may not be of any help!
I had had a problem with getting this computer running(that was fixed thru another thread) then once I got it up and running it came up with a message that said a major problem has occurred and you need to do a system restore! That's when I tried to do it!

If there is another log report you need me to do to give you a better idea of whats happening just let me know which one it is!

Below is the thread where I got the computer up and running.

Thanks!!

Can you post the exact onscreen message, please?

Let's also try this.

Download/install BlueScreenView, http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html .

Double-click BlueScreenView.exe file.

When scanning is done, Edit/Select All...then File/Save Selected Items.

Save the report as BSOD.txt.

Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content and paste it into your next reply.

Please follow the instructions from hamluis first - These are just extra notes -
CPU 60 °C (140 °F) - Please note that this is running a bit hot - Over 50-55C is considered hot -
I noticed you only have XP SP2 installed - You should upgrade to XP SP3 to get critical M/soft updates -

Thank You -

Just a note...Athlon XP2400 CPUs had a max operating temp range up to 85 degrees Celsius, I believe. Considering that we are talking about components that are 9 years old, I don't think 55 Celsius would be considered excessively hot, although it could probably stand to have new thermal grease and/or a new CPU fan.

If you have .dmp files from 2002 on your system...my guess that would be that it needs a clean install, not a system restore.

<<...it came up with a message that said a major problem has occurred and you need to do a system restore! That's when I tried to do it!>>

Please post the exact content of any onscreen message.

Does the system boot today? Have you tried system restore today?

Yes it booted fine today!
I am currently doing updates that where recommended to me, including SP3.
Then I'll try another system restore!
Then post my results.

Thanks for your reply!!

If the system booted fine today why do you want to try doing a system restore again?
That would just roll it back to before the updates etc that you are currently installing.

Personally, I rarely if ever use system restore. Most likely never.
One of the things I do routinely to systems is to clean out all restore points but the last one.
Malware loves to hide in system restore files. By doing a system restore to fix a malware issue you are most likely just putting the problem back out there again.

I would clear out all system restore points and leave it alone if it booted fine today.
In the beginning there was the command line.

I don't use System Restore on my XP installs...but it seems to me that your plan is flawed.

If you make changes to your current XP install (such as installing SP3 and other critical updates)...won't reverting to an earlier restore point...wipe those changes out?

Sorry I haven't posted this earlier! :oopsign:

But here goes, I ended up doing updates that where recommended to me, including SP3.

After reading the posts from Eyesee and hamluis it made since not to do a system restore!

What I did do was after installing all the updates etc. and SP3, I downloaded AVG and scanned, after getting rid of most of the junk that they do for free it said I had like 700+/- registry errors, so I ran their pc tuneup and took advantage of their one time free registry fixing program.

That seemed to work really good!! :clapping:

After that I tried to defrag because of all the adding, replacing and cleaning of the system!
Windows wouldn't let me, so after some research I found, auslogics free defrag download!!

It worked fantastic!!!! :clapping:

So after that it seems to be performing great! We have been using it and my son has been very happy with it!! :thumbup2:

I just wanted to post this cause I hate to see an open ended thread if it is possible to post how the problem was fixed so it may help someone in the future if they have a similar problem!!

Thanks for all the help everyone does in this forum to help me and others!! :thumbup2:

Later!! :busy:
