Hello Helpful Ones
I was downloading a desktop theme, dropped my guard and a bundle of nasty stuff got onto the computer and made itself at home.
I have done the preliminaries as per the post, in particular spybot was helpful. But Stinger did not find anything.
I am running WinXP SP2 with both IE6 and Firefox 1.5.
I hope to hear from you. With many thanks in advance.
Victor

Not trying to "bump" this, just some further information.

I am running a free antivirus called Antivir, which picks up the problem in a scan and says it is the Trojan horse TR/Drop.Small.bke.2 - however it does not seem to be able to delete the file.

I would be grateful for any help you can give so I can clean my computer.

Hi Luton23 and Welcome to the Bleeping Computer!

Download WinPFind:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet

Reboot into SAFE MODE(Tap F8 when restarting)
Here is a link on how to boot into Safe Mode:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder

Run MSCONFIG and enable everything in the startup area. To get to MSCONFIG, click on Start -> Run -> type in MSCONFIG -> click OK!

Under the "General" Tab

Make Sure "Normal Startup-load all device drivers and services" has a green tick by it

Click Apply->Close->Follow the Prompts to Restart

Restart Normal and have the PC Scanned here:
Panda Active Scan

You will need to be using Internet Explorer for the Scan to work

Save the Report it generates

Post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the reports from WinPFind and Panda

Cretemonster

Thanks a lot for this info.
In the mean time I think I may have solved the problem. It may be that by the time I joined this most excellent board the trojan was already quarantined by Antivir, and otherwise only to be found in Spybot's back-up and the Windows restore points. Anyway by repeated running of virus and spyware checkers, and reducing cache to 0 so the Trojan couldn't hide there - good idea, huh! - I seem finally to have got rid of it. After many hours. The last two Trend online scans have come up clean.
Still, better safe than sorry and I shall run the procedure you have sent me (after the holidays) and post again.
Best wishes to you.

K Webber (Luton23)
