I have a Gateway Laptop, model MS2285. It was working just fine yesterday but when I went to turn it off last night, it was already off. Just assumed my husband had already shut it down for me. When trying to turn it on this morning, nothing. It won't power up, no lights, no noises. I had it running on battery power so I tried plugging it in and still nothing. Power cord shows that it's getting power but as soon as I plug it into the computer the light on the cord goes off. I'm not a technical person, so any help you can provide would be appreciated; just make sure it's not in techie talk. Thank you!

Are you sure the model number is MS2285?

I can't seem to find anything on Gateway's web site under that model number.

Bruce.

That's what it says on the sticker on the bottom. There is also NV5378U. I googled that and it pulled up my computer.

It sounds like your laptop's motherboard have a short somewhere as the power adapter turns off when it's plugged into the laptop.

Try removing the battery and power adapter from the laptop. Hold down the power button for 10-30 seconds. Plug in the power adapter and see if it still turns off or not.

Bank of California, I followed your instructions. The power adaptor still turns off when I plug it in. The computer still doesn't power up.
