Hi,

New to the forum (I'm amazed that a site like this is out there for the huddled masses).

I checked my task manager and the file crsss.exe shows up. I rebooted in safemode and looked for the file in autorun (I enabled searching for empty locations, verify code signatures, and hide microsoft entries and pressed F5).

I can't find crsss.exe in any of the image paths. Is this a common malware virus that goes by a different name or something in autorun or am I missing something?

First of all, we need to make sure, your spelling is correct.
Is it crsss.exe, which would be a malicious file, or csrss.exe, which is a legit file?

Whoops! It is csrss.exe not crsss.exe. It still seems strange though because I can't access the file location in Task Manager and nothing happens when I select Properties.

Kind of funny.
In my Task Manager, that's also the only file, when clicking on "Properties" nothing happens.
All other files properties open just fine.
I have no idea why :)

What is Csrss.exe?
Csrss.exe is the executable file for the Microsoft Client Server Runtime Server Subsystem. By default, this file is located, in the C:\Windows \System32 directory. This application has been used by every windows operating system since Windows NT to manage graphical instruction sets. Basically, Csrss.exe is a process controller which means that is can create, delete and schedule threads as needed. Threads are the smallest piece of executable that can be scheduled for a processor. Processes are functions and sub-routines that perform tasks and are usually made up of many different threads. Hence, the need for a controller.

Csrss.exe is an essential part of the windows operating system and deleting it can cause stop errors which is the infamous “Blue Screen of Death”.
