Infected with Internet Security 2011 Malware

I believe I have infected with the Internet Security 2011 Malware. I found a description of the symptoms at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-internet-security-2011 and they are consistent with my problems. I have downloaded, installed Malwarebytes and am unable to succesfully run the program. I receive the mesage "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file" when I attempt to run the program. I have followed the suggestions on allowing access to the entire computer for Malwarebytes. After doing this I am able to start the scan, but the program shuts down shortly after starting. I am hestitant to follow the more advanced guide to remove the Malware without exploring further options. In the space below I have pasted my logs and attached the requested files.

  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

    Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • Finally, please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.

1.
Please copy the contents of the code box below, open notepad and paste it there. On the top toolbar in notepad select file, then save as. In the box that opens type in remservice.bat for the file name. Right below that click the down arrow in the line for "save as" and select all files. Save this to your desktop and close notepad.

Locate the remservice icon on your desktop and double click it. A box will pop up briefly on your screen and disappear, this is normal.

NOTICE: This file was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine.

2.
Uninstalling A Program Through "add/remove"

Click "start" on the taskbar and then click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Please doubleclick the "Add or Remove Programs" icon
A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.
If they exist, uninstall the following by clicking on the following entries and selecting "remove":

Antivirus 2010

Additional instructions can be found here if needed.

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
    Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Download and Run RKill
  • Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply


5.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you

Thank you for the reply. I have followed your advice and here are the results:

Step 1: Followed the instructions. Notepad popped up, but did not disappear.
Step 2: Was able to uninstall a program called Internet Security 2010 from the list of programs.
Step 3: Followed the instructions for this. The first time I was not able to detect any malacious Malware. I did find a suspicious blocked file. The attached log should cover the found suspicious file. In case if it does not, here is the information that it contained in the log: vbma2a38, Kernaldriver, c:\window\system32\drivers\vbma2a38.sys, service start: Demand 0 x 3
Step 4: Double checked that there were no other anti-spyware programs running. Ran the program and I have attached the logs.
Step 5: I downloaded from site one and attempted to run the program while following your instructions. Nothing seems to happen. Deleted and downloaded it from the second site with the same results. I did however run the TDSSKiller program again and did receive a change of messages. It found a malacious program and I followed the instructions for what to do next. I have attached the logs from the fix.
Observations: It seems to be running smoother. More importantly the Internet Security 2011 program does not seem to be popping up anymore.

Let me know if there is anything else that can be done.

Lets try a more powerful tool then we get the other tools to run.

1.
Download and Run RKill
  • Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

  • Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here.
  • Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop.
  • Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
  • Click OK.
  • Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found does not have a tick in it.
  • Copy all of the text in the below code box to the clipboard by highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl+C.
    Files to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\vbma2a38.sys
    
    Drivers to delete:
    vbma2a38
  • In the avenger window, click the Paste Script from Clipboard, Posted Image button.
  • Click the Execute button.
  • You will be asked Are you sure you want to execute the current script?.
  • Click Yes.
  • You will now be asked First step completed --- The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?.
  • Click Yes.
  • Your PC will now be rebooted.
  • Note: If the above script contains Drivers to delete: or Drivers to disable:, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
  • After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, then the log can be found at %systemdrive%\avenger.txt (typically C:\avenger.txt).
  • Please post this log, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

I have followed your instructions. Here are the results from each of them:

- RKill: Nothing of interest.
- ExeHelper: Nothing of interest.
- The Avenger: Nothing of interest.
- TDSS: I ran TDSS and had two files pop up. One program was suspicious (vbma2a38) and the other was considered malicious (unable to remember the name.) I have attached the log and the results. After removing the malicious one, my computer became unstable. The screen would turn blue. The first time the error message was along the lines of a memory problem. The second blue screen I was unable to get a glimpse of the message. I would then run the TDSS program again only to receive the same error message. I went through the same process only to lock up once again. I then deleted and cured both files and my computer appears to be stable.
- Install Recovery: I would run the program and it would start to load the program. I would get the bars and indicating loading progress bar. After it filled up, nothing else would happen.

Hello,

Please run these in the order given.

1.
Download and Run RKill
  • Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply

2.
Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

    3.
    Download and Rename Combofix

    This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

    Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it 1234.scr before saving it to your desktop.

  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on 1234.scr & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

My apolgies for the delay in the responding. I have followed your instructions:

1: Attached are the logs.
2: Attached are the logs.
3: Combo fix continues to give me troubles. I have followed your instructions on downloading combofix. There are two different names that you have listed, Combo-Fix and 1234.scr. Neither one of them bring up the menus for the program that you shown. Combo-Fix brings up a loading bar, while 1234.scr brings up nothing. I have closed all windows and do not have any anti-virus or anti-spyware programs running on my computer.

Hello,


Let's try and run Combofix in Safemode.

Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.
Please see here for additional details.


If Combofix still fails to run please run TdssKiller again.

I have attempted running both programs in Windows XP safe mode with similar results as previously. TDSS Killer is unable to remove the problems and Combo-Fix (renamed 1234.scr) does not start. I have attached the logs that would fit in the attachment. I attempted multiple times in Windows Safe Mode without the Network connection. Also while I was pushing the F8 button at the computer restart, my laptop gave an odd beep sound. Since then my touchpad and keyboard arent working anymore. Any thoughts on how to fix the problem?

Hello,

my laptop gave an odd beep sound. Since then my touchpad and keyboard arent working anymore. Any thoughts on how to fix the problem?

Have you tried to use both in either safemode or regular mode? I guess the next step if these are not working is Do you have access to another computer that you can burn a cd and do you have access to a usb flashdrive?
Do you have A Windows Xp Installation disk?

I do have access to another computer and USB drive. Sadly I do not have a windows xp install disc.

Is your keyboard and touchpad working?


If so I need a new DDS log and a new TDSSKILLER log

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.

* When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:

1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop post the contents of the DDS.txt log. Save the other report incase I need to look at it later.

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
    Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

No luck with the inputs for my laptop, I have found ways around it. The two programs start without any issues. However the TDSS Killer isnt able to remove the programs due to a processing error. I have attempted to attach the logs. However when I attach the DDS logs and the TDSS Killer log, I keep getting an error "This file was too big" for your website.
