I bought an HP with windows XP. It came with all kinds of advertisments preinstalled on it. The only one I can't get to go away is "InterMute Web Privacy and Protection advertisment". It pops up constantly and then I always click on "Don't remind me" but it keeps on popping back up. How the heck do I disable it or even get rid of it? It is really driving me nuts.

Are you using these basic security programs?
(They're all free.)

aČ free - a complementary product to antivirus software which is specialized in protection against harmful software. Antivirus software often features an inadequate protection against Trojans, Dialers and Spyware. aČ fills this gap.
ewido security suite - offers protection against urgently growing threats like Trojans, Worms, Dialers, Hijackers, Spyware and Keyloggers.
Ad-Aware - A good program similar to SpyBot S & D.
Spybot S&D - Detects and removes spyware, of different types, from your computer.
Spywareblaster - A good program that prevents spyware from being installed on your computer in the first place. This program is always running in the background, protecting your computer. It prevents the installation of bad active X controls found in web pages.
SpywareGuard - A nice compliment to SpywareBlaster. This allows you the option to prevent downloads that contain bad active X controls.

If not, you need to. These programs, updated and used regularly, will do a lot to keep your computer clean of spyware, trojans, keyloggers, browser hijackers, etc...

Download them, update them, and then run them.

When installing ewido security suite, under Additional Options uncheck:
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Please read this tutorial on Spybot S&D before using it. Spybot can do SERIOUS damage, if not used properly.

Well, the protection that I have on my computer is Nortons Internet Security 2005 and Webroot's Spysweeper. However, Nortons does seem to bug the heck out of me. Come to think of it, so does Spysweeper. They both interrupt me all the time but I thought they would work. The Intermute was a factory installed advertisment. It was there when I bought the computer brand new. Do I get rid of the protection I have before trying the others? Thank you for any advice.

Intermute is the parent company for TrendMicro and CW Shredder.

Telephone support is available for Trend Micro Anti-Spyware at 1.800.864.6027

Call them and ask how to stop the ad from continually being played on your pc.

They are a reputable company, not crapware.

You might want to look in add-remove programs and see if there is an entry in there for it. If it is click on remove.

Look in your start/programs menu and see if you see it in there as well. An uninstall function may be one of the choices there if it is in there.
