However, after posting my question, I tried the first GMER link again - and it then decided to work. Perhaps the fact that it did not work before had something to do with the malware on this computer, because I had tried it several times before that and nothing happened. Not only that, but now the second GMER link only gives me an error instead of taking me to the majorgeeks like it did at first. Since my screens did then look like your instructions, I continued to follow them and posted the results a few minutes ago as a separate post, since I could not figure out how to change the title of this.
I would like to thank you in advance for you help, and for your patience with a novice such as myself.
Momma~Bear (Sharon)
(Who is trying to help one of her cubs that didn't listen to his momma's advice about being careful on the internet!)

Hello, and thank you in advance for both your help with this matter, as well as your patience with a novice such as I. I am trying to help my cub get his computer up and running. I posted a question earlier, but I will try to delete or consolidate that since I no longer need the answer.
Regarding my situation: This is my son's computer, and I believe that he was on a website he shouldn't have visited and/or doing something he shouldn't have. This computer has been sitting on a table for more than 2 months, and I finally decided to do something about it. When I first started it up, I did a system restore to a system checkpoint back in November, before this problem began. While it does not obviously appear that anything is wrong, a McAfee screen popped up immediately with a warning that the realtime scanning is off. As soon as I turn it on, it turns itself back off about 2 seconds later. The virus & spyware, and web & email features do the same thing. I have not tried to see what else is wrong - I just came here. (Found by initally going to Cnet and downloading hijackthis and you being at the top of the list as the place to translate the codes)
I read your rules and recommendations and followed the instructions for malware removal. When I got to #8, GMER, I did have difficulties, unsure if this computer is 32 or 64 bit. At first, link 1 would not work for me, so I tried clicking on link 2. However, that opened another window for a website called majorgeeks.com, that suggested that I download "spyware doctor". I did try both links several times, and the results were the same everytime - nothing for 1, geeks for 2. After posting my question about this, I decided to try the links again since I was not going to proceed with uncertainty. At that point, link 1 DID work as shown in the instructions, so I proceeded to follow them.
I did run GMER as advised, but was told that it didn't find anything (I forget the exact words). So, I will proceed with the other information as requested. If I forgot anything, please just let me know. I will keep an eye on my email over the next few days so I can respond once you have had a chance to look at this.
Just so you are aware, after I asked my first questions, I closed out the geeks' windows, and just as link 1 worked when it didn't before, link 2 now does NOT work. When I click on link #2 now, the page is very slow to load and eventually just tells me "IE cannot display webpage". Also, your #9 instructions say to open the file and then click on "upload". However, there was no upload button for me, but I did click on the "attach file" button. Perhaps you have recently updated your site and you just haven't gotten to making changes on the instructions yet. I would like to let you know that even with the few minor difficulties I encountered, overall your instructions were very helpful, clear and easy to follow, so thank you!
Sorry for the length of my message - I have OCD with being detail oriented, LOL. Thanks again for your help!
