Hi, my PC has been messed up for weeks with a browser redirect virus, and I got some help here on Bleeping Computer, but had to go away for awhile and it never got resolved (and I actually ran into worse problems in some cases - such as merely having an AV program would cause my desktop to appear black, and it seemed window manager wasnt working).

I've decided I should probably start fixing these things again, so I'll start with this:
Just decided to get Microsoft Security Essentials and it immediately found 2 instances of Win32\Bamital.K in;

file:C:\Windows\System32\wininit.exe
file:C:\Windows\EXPLORER.EXE

I haven't told it to fix them out of fear that they are too important. I've tried quarantining files like these with AVG (which I don't have anymore) in the past and it screws up my computer if I recall correctly.

Note: on my PC I currently have a file of a bunch of AV stuff, including things from last time I was recieving help here, and it includes: HijackThis, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, SuperAntiSpyware, TDSSkiller, GooredFix, and Defogger.

Do I let Security Essentials Disinfect those items or not? Or do I take another path, such as tackling the redirect virus from scratch all over again? let me know. Thanks in advance.

MOD EDIT: I;ve merged all the posts into one here~~boopme

Hello, please post a DDS log here. Please go here....
Preparation Guide ,do steps 6 - 9.

Create a DDS log and post it in this topic.
If GMer will not run Skip it.

So, step 6 which is defrogger, I cant do that because upon restart it causes my computer to go to a pure black screen (windows manager error), so i had to system restore back out.

Should I continue with step 7-9 anyway?

Yes skip any steps that fail.

So, I would honestly be careful about asking people to use defrogger - This is my 2nd time using it and I am surprised at just how unstable my computer becomes. Honestly, I've never used such a hazardous program.

Anyways, I'll paste the DDS log and attach the attach.txt as it told me to.

As for Gmer, it ran, but upon trying to save the ark.txt to the desktop, it failed and froze up, and I had to restart my computer. I tried scanning with it again, but it failed and closed. If you still need the log, let me know how if I can still get it for you and I will.

Thanks so far by the way

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

"just click on Cancel, then Accept".

information and logs:

  • In your next post I need the following

  • .logs from DDS
  • log from RKUnHooker
  • let me know of any problems you may have had

Hi there, I do need help with this redirect virus still!

I'm a student and its test season, but my last one is tomorrow. After that I'll be okay for a while and I'll get on this ASAP.

I should post within the next day or two though.

Just to let you know before then, I can't use Defogger, which I mentioned to Boopme, as it makes my computer unstable (EXPLORER.EXE fails and I have a pure black screen, and am forced to use the task manager and to do a system restore... aghhh...). So, when I do those steps, I will have to skip that one.

I'll let you know when I've done those things.

((EDIT: I'm not sure why my reply was posted 3 times, sorry about that..?))
