MOD edit: I combined all the posts so it will appear as one post.. I'll PM you ~~Mod boopme

This thing is really insane, I hope you guys can help me! This whole mess started about a week ago when I was on my city's official .gov website. I was there to update my business license and do my city taxes, from their home page I clicked on the button for Business licenses and taxes. Along with the correct page, I got a popup saying that Antivirus .net was scanning my computer for malware and for me to standby. I knew exactly what it was the moment I saw it, but it was too late, stupid rogue antivirus was already on my compy. I'm not sure I got from the city website or if it was laying in wait on my system already. So I looked up some ways to fix it, one suggestion was to use system restore. So I rolled my system back (Windows xp home) to a restore point three days earlier. I then ran MBAM, which found four infected files. I quarantined them and hopped onto firefox to see if all was well. It appeared so, no rogue software in my system tray, no hijacked pages, thought I was good to go. About four days later, I was typing an email and in the middle of it I get a popup saying Antivirus .net was scanning my computer. AAEGGHH!! So i did the same process as before, rolled the system back and ran MBAM, which found four more infected files. I quarantined and rebooted, thinking all might be ok. It seemed so, but then I noticed something odd... the hdd activity light on my tower was blinking, one quick flash exactly once per second. I'd never seen this kind of activity before, it made me mildly curious, but not to the point of really looking into it. Here's where things begin to go horribly wrong. That night after dinner and a few drinks I decided to load up Silent Storm, Really fun old game I've been revisiting lately. I heard the CD spin up, then got a popup window saying that something was wrong with CD authentication and that I needed to go to securom.com to fix it. Me being stupid and somewhat inebriated, I did exactly that. There were several options on the page, which said to pick the one that corresponded with the error message you received. So... I clicked on one. And nothing happened immediately. And I still couldn't run Silent Storm. So I rebooted, and all kinds of crazy crap happened when I did. My background was changed into a blue and red screen that said something to the tune of OMG U HAZ VIRUS!!! It also opened firefox of it's own accord and windows media player. Thru the chaos I was able to schedule an Avast boot time scan, then restart and let Avast do it's thing, which was to find and destroy a bunch of infected stuff. When that was finished I loaded into safe mode and ran MBAM again, which found one file that avast missed. I then restarted in regular mode, thought I might have been ok, though I noticed my HDD light was still blinking ominously once per second. I loaded up firefox and did a google search for securom, clicked on one of the results, and had the page redirected to something completely random and unrelated, which tipped me off that I was still infected. I then came here, seeking the aid of those smarter than me!

This is actually the second time around I've tried to post this. The first time in the middle of typing, my computer was taken over by a process labeled HKI1458, about twelve instances of it started running and tied up all system resources and opened internet explorer and windows media player. I hit reset and booted into networking safe mode and emailed the DDS files to myself and am now typing this from my girlfriends laptop. I will have to put the DDS results in a different post on this thread. Gmail gives you a short preview of the email while it's in your inbox, and the preview of the email i sent myself with the dds info says:

HKU\S-1-5-21-789336058-926492609-839522115-1004\Software\SecuROM\CAUTION! NEVER DELETE OR CHANGE

That's the preview in it's entirety, and i didn't write any of that! I don't dare open that email, my GF would kill me if I got her computer infected too! Also,I can't post any info from GMER. I downloaded it and ran it, there were a TON of entries in the log, and when I clicked save it said "unable to perform action, insufficient system resources" and my system would completely lock up. I tried three times with the same result. I was able to run a Sysinternals rootkit revealer scan and save the results from that, I will post if if you guys would like me to. There are over a thousand entries in the report...

So. I have a sinking feeling I may be forced to format my drive and reinstall everything. I have all my important stuff backed up, it's just the time it takes to reinstall windows and everything. I would love to know if there's a way to clean this infection out rather than starting from scratch.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Ok, so it appears that I can post the DDS if I break it up into separate pieces. Gonna try for two, might have to do three. here's piece one:

It also appears that the Pseudo HJT Report part of the file is the part that is causing the problem, I can copy and paste all other parts of the report but that one. Don't really know how that works since it's just text... Anyways, here's part two, rest of the report after pseudo HJT:

Ok, it's not letting me post the logs. I copy and paste it here, but every time I try and post it says connection was reset. I was able to attach the attach part of the DDS, should i attach the other part too? Why couldn't I post the log, but I can post this? Log too long for the forum?

=Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • These instructions have been specifically tailored to your computer and the issues you are experiencing with your computer. It's important to note that these instructions are not suitable for any other computer, even if the issues are fairly similar.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Many many thanks for the help, ST! Both scans are complete, already I see a difference. The strange HDD activity that had been going on has ceased and now it seems programs open and respond as normal. Here are the logs, TDSSKiller first:

Posted Image One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan and password stealer.

This type of infection allows hackers to access and remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it contains any other sensitive information, then from a clean computer, change all passwords where applicable.
It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to appraise them of your situation.

I highly suggest you take a look at the two links provided below:
1. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
2. When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

Earlier versions of Adobe Reader have known security flaws so it is recommended that you update your copy
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  • Remove ALL instances of Adobe Reader
  • Re-boot your computer as required.
  • Once ALL versions of Adobe Reader have been uninstalled, visit: <<here>> and download the latest version of Adobe Reader

Ghosts of Java Haunt UsersPlease follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows" (32-bit) or "Windows x64" (64-bit).
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE...License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u23-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

I do some banking from this computer, and I use MS money to help keep track of my finances. I will change all passwords immediately from a different computer. As soon as I had an inkling that I was infected I opted to not go do any banking or anything that could expose sensitive information, including sites or programs that require a password. Is it still possible that those sorts of things could have been stolen if I didn't use them during the infection? I went thru the steps you asked to clean the infection and secure the computer, including fixing Adobe and Java. I'd still rather not format unless it's absolutely necessary. Here are the logs, OTL first:

Kpn.Kardif,

This was a good idea.

This is a hard question to answer, with malware anything is possible.

ESET Online Scanner
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET Online Scan

Kpn.Kardif,

Lets review your ESET Online Scanner:

It seems like the scanner found some files that are in Quarantine (they will be dealt with once we clean-up our tools later), as well as a keygen that we will remove, and 2 Java exploits.

C:\Documents and Settings\Aaron\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\55\16e2db37-313612f3 a variant of Java/TrojanDownloader.OpenStream.NBF trojan
C:\Documents and Settings\Aaron\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\60\17aeafc-6a622b14 a variant of Java/TrojanDownloader.OpenStream.NBF trojan

All Clean Speech

===> Make sure you've re-enabled any Security Programs that we may have disabled during the malware removal process. <===

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

Updated Anti-Virus Program
It's essential that you have an updated anti-virus program running on your computer. You don't want to run more than one as it can cause program conflicts, as well as false positives

You can view an excellent list of Free Security Software programs that has been compiled by GeekstoGo.

Avoid P2P Programs

Remember that no matter how clean the program you're using for peer-to-peer filesharing may be, it offers no guarantees regarding the cleanliness of files you may choose to download. All files available via p2p filesharing carry a high risk, particularly those that offer you illegitimate methods of using legitimate software programs without paying for them. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer and Risks of File-Sharing Technology.

If you have any of these programs installed then I highly suggest you uninstall them.

NOTE: Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Internet Browsers

Many of the users that I assist here on the forums, ask me which programs they can use to prevent themselves from getting infected again in the future. The best answer I can give you is too practice safe browsing.

Please consider using an alternative browser such as Google Chrome or Opera. They are both much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also have great built-in pop-up blockers.

I also suggest you make your Internet Explore more secure.

Make Internet Explorer more secure

  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level

I've been using Firefox for a number of years now, I started using it because I read that it was significantly more secure than internet explorer. I haven't really looked into Opera or Chrome, how does Firefox stack up against them?

Once again ST, I can't thank you enough for your time and assistance. I could not have figured this out on my own, this is a great community dedicated to helping people deal with these sorts of problem, my hat goes off to you and everybody else who volunteers their time like this.

Firefox is more secure than Internet Explorer, but we are starting to see more infections that are targetting Firefox, so that's one of the reasons why I no longer include Firefox in my all clean speech.

Once again ST, I can't thank you enough for your time and assistance. I could not have figured this out on my own, this is a great community dedicated to helping people deal with these sorts of problem, my hat goes off to you and everybody else who volunteers their time like this.

Thank you for the kind comments. It's comments like yours above that make doing this that much more worthwhile.

Please take care. :)
