My wife has a I Pad that needed a software update to most current version (iOS 4.2). After trying several times to get it to the point of download I almost gave up. The unit would sync to the PC, but would never get thru the BU part. I actually left it hooked up over night.....never got there. Apples solutions for the issue wouldn't correct my problem. I finally found a simple solution using a small software program. I downloaded BackOff http://www.digidna.net/products/backoff/download. The program shuts down the backup
of the I Pad. After using it, the update took about 5 minutes and went w/o a flaw. Once the software was updated, I turned the backup for the I Pad back on using the same Backup software. And went thru the sync and backup in a little less than 5 minutes.
If you are having a similar problem you might give the program a try.
