Hi

I'm having problems removing the google redirect virus and I've also found out that I have another virus which plays adverts even when no window is open. I've tried removing it with AVG, then tried TDSSKiller and Rkill (i think) but for some reason neither of these would run on my laptop...I tried downloading them from many different sites, but when I tried to run as administrator, they never opened. So I got fed up and tried combofix. It worked for a day but somehow I have the virus again...maybe it never went away. Although I'm not sure that Combofix even ran properly as I didn't get a log at the end of it.
So then I did system restore to 5 days ago when my laptop wasn't infected, but it didnt get rid of it...they're both still here. So I tried using malwarebytes and a search and destroy spyware program...still nothing. And I tried using TDSSkiller and Rkill again but I still can't open the programs for some reason!
And I also tried Smitfraudfix and although looking promising, it didnt work either.

I know I'm supposed to upload logs using dds and gmer, but when trying to use dds it froze, and when i used gmer i got the blue screen ):
If you can tell me of a way to get these logs, I'm happy to do it as I know it helps in removing the virus.

Really hoping that someone can help me remove these viruses, I'm getting so fed up!

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I think I'll post in the other section 'I'm infected what do I do' as I dont have any logs....again I'm sorry!

Hi paperboat,

See if you get the reports from this:

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
right click on the link and select 'Save Link/Target As'.

if you have problems, try this download link:
    OTL
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check
.

Hi paperboat,

Sorry I made a new post, I thought that I was wrong to post here

That's ok, as you couldn't post the reports you were right to post in the other forum.

A little work for you to do now:

Step 1
Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
Copy the lines in bold below. (make sure that :Otl is on the first line )

  • Return to OTL,
  • right click in the Custom Scans/Fixes window (under the blue bar) and choose Paste.

    Posted Image
  • Click the red Run Fix button.

    Posted Image
  • OTL will reboot your system once the fix has completed.
  • After the reboot, you may need to double click OTL to launch the program and retrieve the log.

Copy and paste the contents of the OTL log that comes up after the fix in your next reply.

if you lose the report, there will be a copy here:
C:\_OTL\MovedFiles

Step 2
You are missing one important program on that computer: An antivirus.
This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can and run a complete scan of the computer:
Install one of these, update the definitions and then run a full scan. Let it quarantine/delete anything it finds. Let me know if there is anything that it reports but can not remove.

Note*:
Upon installation MS Security Essentials will check that your OS is a legal copy.

In your next reply, please submit:
Otl fix report
and let me know if the AV scan found anything.

Thanks.

Hello Starbuck,

Do I not need to check any of the boxes like before when using OTL?

Also, do I need to run defogger program beforehand? -edit- I think I should, so I will...

And I uninstalled AVG antivirus because I thought it would interfere with some of the spyware programs, but I'll install Avira after OTL (:

I'll get to it now. Thanks for helping.

Hi Starbuck,

I ran the program like you said however when I began the fix (with the settings the same as the first scan i.e minimal output)an error message came up saying:

OTL: Windows - No Disk
Exception Processing Message 0xc0000013 Parameters 0x754C023C 0xA4253694 0x754C023C 0x754C023C

I panicked and pressed the close button on each message (it kept coming up after I pressed x) and then OTL continued. I'm a bit worried that I didn't follow your directions correctly as I thought I should try closing the program and to wait for your instructions...however it stopped and rebooted my laptop and i got a fix report:

All processes killed

did the error messages occur because I disabled CD emulator drivers?? Should I not have done so?

Sorry if i have messed up. I'll be waiting for further instructions on whether to start downloading AV or to redo OTL fix.

Thanks

Hi paperboat,

Do I not need to check any of the boxes like before when using OTL?

No, because you are running a fix it doesn't matter what boxes are ticked.

Also, do I need to run defogger program beforehand?

When Otl runs a fix, it stops everything from running.... so it wasn't necessary to run Defogger.

I'll be waiting for further instructions on whether to start downloading AV or to redo OTL fix.

From the report, the OTL fix ran ok.
Yes, install the AV now.
Avira is a good choice.

Let me know when it's installed and if anything was found when it ran a scan.
Also let me know if you are still being redirected.

Thanks

Hello,

I've scanned my computer using Avira AntiVir Premium. Strangely no virus was found though. Here's the report:

I've checked google and yahoo and both seem to be fine now! I'm not being redirected anymore. But I find this strange as no viruses were found...so how did it get rid of it??

Is there anything else that I need to do?? Is there some way that I can check to see if the virus has been removed?

I've also run malwarebytes and CCleaner just in case too.

Thank you!!

Hi paperboat,

I've checked google and yahoo and both seem to be fine now! I'm not being redirected anymore. But I find this strange as no viruses were found...so how did it get rid of it??

It may well have been one of the earlier tools that you ran.

Is there anything else that I need to do?? Is there some way that I can check to see if the virus has been removed?

Yes, a couple of things to do.

Step 1
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 23 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE 6 Update 23".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • select 'Windows' from the Platform down arrow.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

    Java 6 Update 21
    Java SE Runtime Environment 6

  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u23-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Step 2
Please remove any earlier version of Combofix you may have on your system.
Right click on the icon and select delete.

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

This is an example, you may rename ComboFix to anything you want.

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    For more information read:
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

    Then:

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

If running Vista, you may not see this screen
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Thanks

Yes, you may as well do it now, it'll save doing it later.

Hi Starbuck,

I installed new java and adobe, and then began using combofix, like you said. It didnt work though, as I got the blue screen halfway through it.
When I ran combofix, i got a message about agreeing to combofix (cant remember exactly)and then got a loading bar (?). then combofix rebooted my laptop, and when it came back on an administrator box popped up saying it was going to began scanning. It got to about stage 50 but then i suddenly got a blue screen. And I also have no log. I do have 'catchme.txt' file which says:

File "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\volsnap.sys" added successfully
File list cleared

Not sure what this is...

And also, when i go to Local Disk (C:) there is a Combo-Fix file. That was created when I did the scan. When I open it though, it takes me back to my computer but the address bar tells me in in the file. It's 26.8MB and contains 283 files and 3 folders. Is the file supposed to be there? It seems odd.

I dont think i did anything wrong. Do you know why this happened? I haven't damaged my laptop, have I?

Thank you.

Hi paperboat,

It maybe that one of the programs on your system was interfering with Combofix.

Try running it in safe mode:

Restart your computer.

When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows Vista Advanced Boot Options.
Select the Safe Mode option using the arrow keys.
Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Vista Safe Mode.
When Windows starts you will be at a typical logon screen. Logon to your computer and Vista will enter Safe mode.

Although I think i should have run it as administrator as while scanning it said something like 'access denied must run as administrator' twice. Should I perform it again?

Thank you.

It wouldn't hurt.
It may be that some files were locked from CF, best to make sure.
