My win 7 laptop, upgraded from vista, just shows a black screen and cursor partway through startup. Safe mode just increases the size of the cursor. Can anyone give me any ideas on what to do?

Thanks

Is this a new computer, or an older one that you upgraded to Windows 7?

Typically...a black screen with flashing cursor in upper left corner at boot...indcates a problem with the MBR.

Depending on the manufacturer of the laptop, there may be documentation at the manufacturer's website...for dealing with this.

Its not that old, I got it just as win 7 was about to come out so it came with vista, with a free upgrade included.
The cursor can be moved. Changed BIOS to boot from dvd and put in win 7 upgrade disc, but it just goes to the error ecovery screen, then no matter which option I select to the black screen.

You might have to do a clean install since system restore didn't work. Hopefully you're able to back up your data.
