PXE-MOF : Exiting Intel PXE ROM

I have been given a friends laptop -Acer Aspire 5553- to try & fix. He tells me that when he turned it on this morning it was unresponsive , took about 5 attempts to open Internet Explorer , then Microsoft security essentials came up with a message something along the lines of " close down system to save computer from problems " ( I know it's vague but that's all he remembers)
He turned it off then back on , a BSOD appeared briefly then went to

Check cable connection!
PXE-MOF : Exiting Intel PXE ROM
Operating system not found .

Thats where it is now. Any help pls?
