I was searching out how to fix the problem with my computer and came across a thread from here that was very similar to whats going on with my computer. the topic is now closed, but i was hoping i might have a similar issue, as it seems to have been solved, the link is http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic375751.html

i have done virus check and removal, malware scan and removal, cleaned/fixed registry.. I had originally been having problems with redirecting, and multiple mshta.exe tasks running in task manager. but when i did the gmer scan for the requested preparation, my computer restarted once the scan started and now its saying i have multiple tasks of another program running, not the mshta.exe program. i do have a DDS log. I'd really appreciate any help you're able to offer with this problem, thanks!

Thank you for your help Gringo! I really appreciate the assistance :D Since posting my original question, i havent had too many of those mshta.exe popping up in my task manager. i had a couple yesterday, got rid of them, and they havent come back since. but i also do not believe i have restarted my computer since. so perhaps thats why...i also noticed after posting my reply that the download manager on firefox was acting funny. it always pops up after downloading programs and stuff, but now the list just keeps having things added to it, making it longer and longer, the longer the download window was open. i want to say that the file names all looked pretty familiar, so i dont think random things were being downloaded onto my system. i just selected to not have that window pop up for right now to try and combat it. heres the report from the rootkit unhooker program...

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Thank you!

so before i ran combofix, i did restart the computer once earlier in the day to watch something on it. i have had issues with the sound on the computer for ages and i usually have to restart to get the sound to work again. not too long after i restarted the task manager ended up with quite a few extra tasks, not just the mshta.exe, but multiples of others. then i downloaded combofix, i made sure all my shields on avast were disabled and my other "anti" types of programs were off. i made sure everything was closed before i ran it. it had to download the recovery console thing, and then it continued, then it said it something about rootkit activity and the computer needed to be restarted (which i expected as per my above instructions) but when the computer restarted, the combofix window is the only thing showing on my desktop aside from the picture (no icons or taskbar or anything, i wasnt sure if that should be there or not) and in the window it just says to wait, that combofix is preparing to run, but its not doing anything since then. the little thing is still flashing on in the window so i dont think its frozen...i also made sure that i didnt click anything on the screen to make sure it wouldnt stall...but its just not doing anything. Im currently using a different computer to reply here. its been over 15 minutes now and im not sure if i should shut down the computer or what i should do, thank you :)

*i also wanted to edit to add that as of 7:35pm(eastern) i havent touched anything. i wasnt sure if it would just take a long time to get through or what, so its still sitting there on my desktop, i just didnt want to mess anything up..thanks!

Hello

shut it down when you can and run combofix this way

I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Im trying to run combofix in safe mode and its telling me that i have avast shields active, but they're all disabled. i made sure before i started that everything was off and then i double checked when that popped up. all shields say they're off. then i clicked ok, and it said they were still on, and i can click ok to continue but that it could cause problems...so i have not clicked anything, i dont know if i should shut it down or not...thank you so much for your assistance!

How are things running now?

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add/remove programs

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates

  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

things are still running well, the only question i had was about uninstalling older versions of Adobe, i wasnt sure what i should uninstall and what i shouldnt. the ones in my program list are: Acrobat.com, Adobe air, Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX, Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin, and then the newest download, Adobe Reader X. i wasnt sure if any of those needed to be removed or not. Thank you so much, i really appreciate all the assistance!!

Greetings

Right now the only one that needed to be removed was the Adobe Reader

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ehTray] C:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehtray.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RemoteControl] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LanguageShortcut] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\Language\Language.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\NeroCheck.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Freecorder FLV Service] "C:\Program Files\Freecorder\FLVSrvc.exe" /run
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DivXUpdate] "C:\Program Files\DivX\DivX Update\DivXUpdate.exe" /CHECKNOW
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

NOTE**You can research each of those lines >here< and see if you want to keep them or not
just copy the name between the brakets and paste into the search space
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliPoint]

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

Go Eset web page to run an online scannner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • copy and paste the results here in this topic
  • you may also find here C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic
