I have a Toshiba Satellite E205 running windows 7 64bit. I recently sent it in for service under warranty and was told the hard drive was bad and had to be replaced. When I got it back six weeks ago everything seemed fine until I tried to reinstall some software from the CD/DVD drive. I updated the drivers and still not working. The system recognizes the drive, and am able to view DVD's, and audio CD's work fine as well. I have also been able to burn a CD and DVD, but when I attempt to install anything the system restarts every time I hit the install button on the installer. I have tried various discs thinking I just had a corrupt disc (photoshop elements, MS office 2007, turbo tax, and a few others. Not sure what to try next. Thanks

Does everything else seem to work properly? Please look in device manager - are there any errors?

Everything appears to be fine otherwise, I'm not having any other problems. I don't see any errors in device manager either. Thanks though

I notice you stated your computer was under a warranty, so I am assuming this computer is fairly new.

I also see where you just had the hard drive replaced because the original one was bad.

Before I get too far with my thinking here, I need you to clarify for me exactly how long ago you purchased this computer, because I am thinking it's been less than a year ago.

I am also wondering if the techs who replaced your hard drive would know why this is happening.

It appears your drive is functioning and performing as it should be with the exception that it is crashing the computer when you attempt to run an executable from a disk.

Have you tried looking in Event Viewer for any errors in the application events or hardware events logs?

You can access it by typing eventvwr.msc into the search bar located in your windows start menu.

If you have having issues here, with deciphering those logs, you can do the following.

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Bruce.

Hi,thanks for your time. Yes, the computer is fairly new,it was purchased in June of 2010, and has been used for household purposes.

I purchased it at Best Buy, which is where I took it when the hard drive failed in October. It just wouldn't turn on one day, total black screen and didn't even try to boot. The guy there said after his diagnostics that the hard drive was faulty and had to send it out to be replaced. They said "it's just one of those things". Due to warranty they couldn't do it in store.

I didn't get it back until mid December because of some problems of getting the right recovery CD's. Everything seemed to be working as it should just like it was new out of the box. I didn't spend alot of time messing with it during the holidays, but when I first tried to install some things in January it started shutting down every time. Took it back in to Best Buy and they had no idea what the problem was and they would have to send it off again. I'm not crazy about doing that since it took seven weeks to get back last time. But if it comes to that, I guess I at least have the option. It just seems like it should be something simple. The drive seems to be functioning fine every other way, and I never had a problem with it before.

Thanks again

Thanks for your reply.

I have called on another Advisor named Broni who is very good with issues concerning drivers such as CDROM.SYS and CDFS.SYS.

Hopefully he will get you back on track.

Bruce.

SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION is not that common error.
From what I can find, it's usually caused by outdated drivers, especially the chipset and video drivers.
Go to Toshiba site and see, if there are any newer drivers for your devices.
Also, make sure your Windows updates are current.
We'll go from there.

I think I'm in more trouble now. During the windows updates somehow the computer powered down and now I can't get it to boot at all, it's just stuck on the Toshiba screen. I have no idea what to do from here. Is it time for me to suck it up and send it out for warranty service or can I try to boot from the recovery cd. Thanks so much

I'd definitely pursue warranty way.
There is something wrong with this machine.
