Posted 14 December 2005 - 01:59 PM

Seem to have received an infection over the last day or so on my Sony laptop running XP.
I have a variety of A/V (Trend-Micro / Symantec) and anti-spyware tools (AdAware, Spybot S&D, WinPatrol) but they have not helped. I'm basically seeing picture popups and startups of new Firefox sessions

I searched here for some of the files appearing in my HJT log and see that I probably have at least a VX2 infection. So I followed the thread and have included some output files here from HJT, L2Mfix and Ewido.

Ewido cleaned up some items, but the problems still exist. LMK what else needs to be done.

Thanks.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

If after the reboot the desktop icons don’t disappear or the log does not pop up then in the l2mfix folder double click the second.bat file to continue with the fix.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

OK, my laptop was shutdown until I received your reply. I booted up and ran the l2mfix.bat file from the folder on my Desktop. Selecting option #2. This opened several windows and had quite a few error and other messages. I then hit a key when directed to reboot.

After reboot, I saw the Desktop icons normally appear, but did not notice them disappear ... unless it only does this for a fraction of a second. The log file did open up though. I did try running the second.bat file in the l2mfix folder, but only received a message that this file was not meant to be run on it's own.

Then the EwidoGuard process running in the background reported a spyware incident:

C:\Windows\system32\rpgwizc.dll was reported to be a Spyware.Look2me type. I clicked on the OK button to remove.

I then received a new message not seen before from the WinPatrol process about a File Type Change. Something is changing one of the associations for the .URL file.

The program currently associated with the file is:
Name
Company Name
c:\program files\avant browser\avant.exe %1

A change was made to use the follwoing program file type.
Microsoft Windoes Operating System
Microsoft Corp
c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\expolre.exe %1

Is this change OK? (I selected NO)

At this point I still have pop-up Firefox sessions, but the pop-up pictures on the desktop seem to have gone.

Here are the l2mfix and HJT logs:

EwidoGuard disabled. Reran l2mfix options #1 and #2. Still did not see icons disappear after reboot - only during the processing of option #2.

After reboot, my wireless card was not functioning, so I had to reboot again. Second time it was OK. I could only stay online a short while as I had to go to work ... but in 5 minutes, I saw no Firefox browser session startup by itself. However, I'm still seeing messages from WinPatrol about changing file associations for .URL.

Here are the log files for l2mfix and HJT:

Fix these with HJT – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ntfat8 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntfat8.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Telephony - C:\WINDOWS\system32\irrml5911.dll (file missing)

DownLoad http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntfat8.dll

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

START – RUN – type in %temp% OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

OK, the previous cleanup actions were completed. The only residual issue is the occasional message from WinPatrol regarding a possible change in file associations for type .URL :

--------------------------------------------
The program currently associated with the file is:
Name
Company Name
c:\program files\avant browser\avant.exe %1

A change was made to use the follwoing program file type.
Microsoft Windows Operating System
Microsoft Corp
c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\explore.exe %1

Is this change OK? (I always select NO)

---------------------------------------------

All other issues seem to be gone. The system seems to boot up much slower though.
In any case here is my last HJT log:

One other thing just appeared. I searched for new updates to AdAware (found one for 12/16) and Spybot S&D (no new updates) and ran them.

AdAware reported nothing

Spybot S&D reported several entries for Command Service, but could not remove all as they were in memory. The program suggested that I reboot and allow the process to run prior to Windows bootup. I clicked Yes.

On bootup the process ran and reported 3 entries of this Command Service in the registry.

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\cmdService
HKLM\System\ControlSet001\cmdService
HKLM\System\ControlSet002\cmdService

Again it was reported that 2 of the 3 entries were in memory and could not be removed.

Should I run this again in Safe Mode?

It does not appear that there is a Free Trial for Spy Sweeper any longer.

I went to the website and clicked on the Free Spy Scan link. I downloaded, installed, updated and ran the program based on your post above. It found 11 items and 92 associated traces (log below) ... BUT there is no Next button. Instead there is an area that states:

Spy Sweeper Detected Threats on Your Computer
Subscribe now to removed detected threats
An Active Spy Sweeper Subscription is required for Removal
Subscribe Now ($29.95) ...... Subscribe Later

Here's the log:

Spy Sweeper will provide you with detailed information about the operations being performed in this area.

So do I need to purchase this program to properly clean these malware programs?

Thanks.

Well you are right - it certainly looks like they did eliminate the 2 week trial!

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Update: I turned off the XP system restore and rebooted. I then installed Microsoft AntiSpyware, upgraded it and ran. It reported two Adbots and two Trojans. I marked for removal.

I then rebooted and restarted the XP system restore. I no longer have any more popups of any kind.

However, when running Spybot S&D, the three Command Service entries in the registry that I mentioned earlier are still being reported. And of these, only one can be cleaned as the other two are supposedly in memory. These were not reported by Microsoft AntiSpyware.
