Hi 66#1,

I'll be handling your HJT log and whilst I'm carrying out the review I need
you to understand and action the following:

You are running HijackThis from a temporary folder. When run from a temporary folder, the backups HijackThis
makes may accidentally get deleted, so please put HijackThis into a permanent folder.
Full instructions on how to do this can be found here:Detailed Explanation
Brief instructions for this are:
  • To create a permanent folder:
  • Click My Computer, then C:\
  • In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
  • That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
  • Now you have C:\HJT\ folder.
  • Put your HijackThis.exe there.

Hello 66#1,

There is certainly one piece of malware in your log that should be removed at this time.
It would be helpful if you could also advise what symptoms you were having that caused you to suspect a malware infection.

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button and when complete
Put a check beside all of the items listed belowO16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/068fa131dac46d...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Close all open Explorer windows and browsers
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When complete and all files removed, close the application

Reboot your machine, run HijackThis from its new location and post a new log here together with
the information I requested above.

Hi 66#1,

Many thanks for the log.

It would be helpful if you could also advise what symptoms you were having that caused you to suspect a malware infection.

I really need this information to be able to tell if there are any hidden infections on your machine that may not be showing in your HJT log. What was wrong with your machine and has the fix cured the problem?

Thanks,
Peter

Machine slowness in general. My laptop has slowed down noticeably in the last month or so. I've been unable to get it back to performance that is acceptable to me. My laptop is a 2.4 gig Toshiba, and it was lightning fast to me before this problem.

Hi 66#1,

The slowness that you have reported does not fit with the possible hidden malware infection that I was thinking about. I think we can resolve the slowness issue you are suffering but you may need a couple of attempts before we identify the main culprit.

I would like you to run a couple of online virus scans and clear all your temporary files and folders as follows:

Run two online virus scan from both of the following sites.http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co...n_principal.htm
and http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Allow both virus scans to remove any virus infections that they find (please let me know if anything is found).
Reboot your machine when it has finished.

These processes will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Reboot your machine.

Run Hijackhis and post a new log here together with a report on the current performance of of your machine along with details of anything found during the online scans.

In addition to the above information you could perhaps supply the following:
  • Have you run the disk defragmenter program lately.
  • Was the slowness sudden or a gradual degradation.
  • What version of Norton are you running and does it include the Internet Security.

Ok, I've done all the steps. I have defragged before, even though it tells me it is unnecessary. The slowness seemed to come on all at once, about a month or so ago. My laptop was purchased in December of last year, and it came with Norton Antivirus '03. I have a subscription with Norton with LiveUpdate etc... I just downloaded XP service pack 2 as well if that helps any. The virus scans found no problems.

Here is my new log:

Hi 66#1,

Thanks for carrying out the last set of fixes. I think the next step for us is to try and identify what is running on your machine and what are the most resource hungry ones. Could you also let me know how much memory is installed on your machine.

If you press CTRL+ALT+DEL then you should be presented with the Windows Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab and let me know which are the top five processes in terms of CPU and Mem Usage.

I now need to know which services are running so please download and run the following:

Getservices.zip - Get list of XP/2000/NT Services

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up.

Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post along with the memory and process information.

Hello again,

I have 256 MB of DDR SDRAM.

Here are my top 5 processes:

As for CPU, they all say 01 or 0 except for System Idle Process which is 99.

Top 5 for Mem. usage are:

svchost.exe-25,912K
iexplore.exe-25,132K
explorer.exe-9516K
ccApp.exe-9128K
realplay.exe-8008K

Here's the notepad results:

Hi 66#1,

The Getservices log doesn't show any lingering malware and your top 5 services look o.k. However, there is a C-DillaSrv service running that is thought to cause slowdowns. I would like you to stop and disable this service and see if there is any improvement in the machines performance.

You reported earlier that the slowness started about a month previously. This wasn't per chance at the same time that you had/were installing SP2. Did you install SP2 from a disk or download it from the web?

To Stop & Disable C-DillaSrv
  • Go to Start >>> Control Panel and select Administrative Tools (you may need to be logged on as an Administrator)
  • Double click on the Services option and the Services window will open.
  • Click on the Extended tab at the bottom and scroll down until you see C-DillaSrv
  • Click on the service and you will see the option to Stop on the left hand side.
  • Click the Stop option then move back to the name C-DillaSrv, right click and select properties.
  • In the Client Properties window select Disabled from the Startup type dropdown box.
  • Click Apply, OK and then close all windows.
Reboot your machine and run it for a while to test the relative performance.

Report back in this thread with the results.

Hello again!

I had the slowness problem before I downloaded the service pack.

I dsabled the C-dilla, and my laptop seems to be noticeably faster! It's still not like it used to be, but it's a lot better. Or, it could just be me.

Thanks for the help!

Hi 66#1,

It's good to hear that your response times have improved. There are some more services that you could stop and and disable providing you are CERTAIN you are not using them. Run the instructions that I gave you previously and stop & disable the following:Indexing Service
DNS Client
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
Smart Card
SSDP Discovery Service
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Uninterruptible Power Supply
WebClient
Portable Media Serial Number Service
Wireless Zero Configuration
Your log is now clean but you need the protection of a firewall. I haven't fully checked the SP2 one but bear that in mind and avoid conflicts between them if you install a different one. Following the simple steps below will help to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point. You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:Understanding and Using Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Update Site regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
