Recently I had formatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows. Ever since, I've been able to successfully log on only half of the time. The other half, it hangs at the blue "welcome" screen. Whenever I press ctrl+alt+del, I get a blank screen with my wallpaper. Explorer is running, however there is no start menu/icons etc. I've tried ending explorer and running it again, but nothing changes. I reboot until I log on successfully, but it's a hassle nonetheless.

I've been getting a lot of bsod action lately too, so I tried seeing if my ram was the issue... log ons failed similarly, however I noticed something weird- I was under the impression I had 3 gigs; one being 1g and the other 2g, but both read 2 gigs under system info when I tested them individually. When I'm using both, it reads 3 gigs. 2+2=3?... I'm confused. Is this a sign of bad ram? I've already run memtest overnight with no errors.

Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

Hi cornandbeans -
If you can log on at all please try to follow these instructions so that we may find the errors -

Please download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Thank You -

Hi again -
Please right click on My Computer > Click on Properties > Hardware > Device Manager - Now look down the side for Sound Video & Game controllers -
Click on the + sign and see if any item has a ! beside it (mainly Realtek Audio) - If there is one you must update these drivers -
Caused By Driver : RtkHDAud.sys
Caused By Address : RtkHDAud.sys+2d0545
File Description : Realtek® High Definition Audio Function Driver
These items seem to point to that area -

Thank You -

No, there is no ! sign. Whenever I'm doing intensive audio editing it seems to crash... sometimes for more unexpected reasons than others. Should I look into a new soundcard or is my software giving it too much to handle?

FWIW: Audio editing is not RAM intensive, IME...what programs are you using for such?

I would just uninstall the current audio drivers...and then reinstall same.

Usually I have instances of Izotope RX, FL studio, and melodyne running. The audio editor I use is called Edison and is apparently RAM based.. Used more for micro sampling rather than recording long audio files.

I installed the latest drivers for my soundcard, however blue screens still keep happening...

After installing the OS did you install the chipset driver? And are you obtaining all drivers from the OEM websites as opposed to getting them from Windows Update or allowing "Windows to find the best driver"?
