Hello all,

I tried following the guide as much as possible, but I kept getting a BSoD when running GMER.EXE. Also, Win XP firewall was shut off and all controls were disabled in the applet. Don't know if that is due to one of these infections turning it off or due to the fact I'm on a domain network and it may be disabled via group policy.

Please refer to this post for some background information.

Getting stuck without a Ctrl + Alt + Delete message at bootup no longer seems to be an issue, but:
  • Many instances of wuauclt.exe process in Task Manager > Processes. Today there was one instance that had 900 K (or was it 600 K) of Mem Usage that I could not kill, and seemingly realated to that, most websites were blocked.
  • Several instances of mshta.exe.
  • I'm not sure about being able to boot in safe mode...haven't tried lately...no need to.

Please let me know what else you need me to try.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide,

Conan Kelly

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Gringo,

Here are the issues that I've had (some no longer seem to be an issue):

  • Many instances of wuauclt.exe in Windows Task Manager > Processes Tab...usually in the neighborhood of 4,600 K of Mem Usage with a User Name of SYSTEM. This only happened once...the other day I had one instance that I could not kill in task manager (900 K of Mem Usage I think) and most websites were blocked. I had to restart the system mid-day, and that problematic instance of wuauclt.exe did not come back.
  • Several instances of mshta.exe
  • I can put the system in standby overnight, but it will most likely be useless when I wake it up the next morning. When I wake it and login, some of the startup programs freeze (including the instance of explorer.exe that runs the desktop icons and taskbar. Sometimes I can kill each process in Task Manager and restart everything manually one-by-one, but more often than not, it is easier to reboot.
  • 2 days in a row now, Desktop background pic has been changed to (None), along with the Screen Saver, thus disabling On resume, password protect; and Windows Explorer/My Computer > Tools > Folder Options... > View tab > Advanced settings:...both Hidden files and folders > Show hidden files and folders has been selected and Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) has been unchecked. I normally keep hidden/system set to hide/do not show.
  • I can not login in Safe Mode, but I don't know if that is due to infections or maybe some policy changes have been made to prevent me. I used to be able to.
  • Because I've never had to use gmer.exe before, I don't know if this is due to infections or what, but 3 times I ran gmer and 3 times I got a BSoD

I was having issues with, but no longer am:
  • Very long logoff/shutdown process or system locks up during. Several times I had to force the power off by holding the power button for a 3 - 5 count. Since I started killing all instances of wuauclt.exe and mshta.exe, along with all *.exe's under my user name, this is no longer an issue
  • About half the time on boot up, I would not get the Ctrl + Alt + Delete message that would bring up the login box...Just the blue Windows background. I realized that pressing the F8 or F12 key on boot up to get boot up menu would solve the problem most of the time. If that Ctrl + Alt + Delete message would not pop up, I had to force power off by holding power button.

Thanks again for all of your help,

Conan

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo,

I tried to run Combofix a couple times last night with no luck.

When it got to the point about downloading/installing Recovery Console, I would click "Yes", it would start to download it, but after a while download would slow, then stop completely. I don't think CF froze up. Just (for one reason or another) had a slow connection to MS's RC site where it finally gave out. First attempt stopped at 70% + downloaded. Second attempt was in the low 20's % downloaded. When DL crapped out, I just closed CF by clicking the close button ("X") in the top right corner of the MS-DOS-esqe CF window.

Do you have a direct link to MS's RC download (if not, I'll google for it later)? Maybe I'll try to DL/install RC manually/separately before running CF.

Thanks again for all of your help,

Conan

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode with networking but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode with networking so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode with networking.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode with networking option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Gringo,

When I get a chance, I will try this. But last time I tried (3-4 weeks ago), I couldn't log on in safe mode.

I don't know if it is some infection preventing this, or Group Policy (local/network (domain network)) here at work.

I will let you know,

Conan
