laptop starts up, then shuts down

I have an old laptop with windows XP - When I power up, after 3-5 seconds, it beeps 1 time and the screen goes blank. Any suggestions ???

It is a good sign that it beeps at boot!!! can we have a bit more info on your machine please i.e make/model/cpu and ram.
have you checked to see if your ram is seated properly?? is your machine still going through the process of booting/are the lights flashing to show hd is been accessed?? the more info you can give us, the quicker and better response to your issue!!
