AVG corrupted file no fix?

I ran AVG and I got this message c:]windows\sminst\xerces-depdom_2_7.dll corrupted file. Moved to vault. I did research and they said the only way to get rid of this problem is to crash the computer. So I reset computer to factory settings. I redownloaded AVG. Ran it again. Same error message. Now the computer is running crazy. It prompts me for disk scans every time I turn it on. I'm confused as to what to do. I'm on a Gateway laptop. With Windows Vista.
