Hello, newbie here, DIY type.

XP Home in continuous restart loop. Gets to to windows screen/blue sliding bar for a few sec., then shuts down and restarts. Will do this until I push the power button.

Seems things started a couple of weeks ago. AVG 2011 free started showing popups. Resident Shield Multiple Threats Detected. Something about white listing. A few days later AVG wanted to update. Did the update then restarted. That's when the restart loop started.

My system is a home brew. XP Home/SP3, mother board is MCP6P M2+, cpu is AMD Athlon 64x2 5000+,1 Gig. ram, 2+1 port IEEE-1394 Firewire PCI card, 1 tera byte HDD, DVD.

I have the original 'old' XP cd and a operating laptop. I'am able to boot the sick computer with the XPcd and get to the Recovery Console and boot 'Puppy' (Linux) Live CD and go on line.

Will not boot to safe mode or any other of the options. When started with 'Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure' get blue screen with error message..... Stop: c000021a {Faal System Error} The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut down.

Have a nice day and thanks
Tom

Hi, :welcome:

We will need to view the system status from an external environment. You will need a USB drive and a CD to burn. There will be several steps to follow to determine the reason for the restart loop.

Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Run GETxPUD.exe
  • A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  • Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  • The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  • Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  • Next download driver.sh to your USB drive
  • Also Download Query.exe to the USB drive. In your working computer, navigate to the USB drive and click on the Query.exe. A folder and a file, query.sh, will be extracted.
  • Remove the USB & CD and insert them in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  • The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  • In some computers you need to tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD, in others is the Esc key. Please consult your computer's documentation.
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Then type bash driver.sh -af
  • Press Enter
  • You will be prompted to input a filename.
  • Type the following:

    Winlogon.exe

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    Userinit.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After the search is completed type Exit and press Enter.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as filefind.txt
  • Lastly type bash query.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located at sdb1 named RegReport.txt
  • Plug that USB back into the clean computer and post the contents of the report.txt, filefind.txt and RegReport.txt in your next reply. If too large, attach the files to your replry.

Perhaps what you provided may be enough.

Download the enclosed [attachment=86507:Replace.txt] file and save it in the USB drive
  • Boot to xPUD as before and insert the USB drive
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh and Replace.txt that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh -r
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named filerep.txt

Post the contents of the filerep.txt in your next reply and try the computer in Normal Mode.

No request for help throughout private messaging will be attended.

Follow the process on #2 above. Prior to removing the USB drive, reboot to xPUD. Once done, pull the USB drive and see if the reports are present in it.

report.txt
filefind.txt
RegReport.txt

Post their content in a reply.

Lets manually replace the winlogon.exe file from the i386 folder to the system32.

While in xPUD, click on mnt then on sda1, on the right pane, double click on the WINDOWS folder, then on the system32 folder. Locate the file winlogon.exe in this folder. Right click on the file and rename it to winlogon.exe.vir.

Then go back one step. That should put you in the /mnt/sda1/WINDOWS folder. Locate the ServicePackFilesfolder and double click on it, then on the i386 folder. Locate the file winlogon.exe in this folder. Right click on it and select Copy.

Go back two steps, that should put you back on the /mnt/sda1/WINDOWS folder. locate and doubleclick on the System32 folder. On an empty space in the right pane, right click and select Paste. That should copy the winlogon.exe file to the System32 folder.

If successful, restart in Normal Mode.

The RegReport is not present as instead of running the Bash Query.sh command, you did not Exit the file find and was considered as a file, rather that a command.

If the computer does not boot in Normal Mode, run only the Bash Query.sh command, reboot and see if the report is present. If present, post its contents. Wait until is says All done!. It may look as locked but it is not. Give it some time to complete.

And a box saying... Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.......

I would like to see the Bash Query.sh ->RegReport.txt as requested in my last post.

Lets search for explorer.

  • Boot the computer xPUD.
  • Click on File
  • Expand mnt
  • Expand your USB (sdb1)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh.
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh -f
  • Press Enter
  • You will be prompted to input a filename.
  • Type the following:

    explorer.exe

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search this file.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as filefind.txt

Please note - all text entries are case sensitive

Copy and paste the filefind.txt for my review
