I'm not sure if I'm doing this right. But, my computer was recently infected with some sort of virus. After a little research and help from friends I think my virus might be called the "security tools" virus. But I'm not sure, as I am not very good with computers. :(

This is what it does. When I click on links (including google search results)it almost always says reported attack page. And it wont let me proceed. Sometimes it also opens windows media player if I click a link aswell (nothing plays) which freezes the browser alltogether. I have tried switching to google crome and internet explorer but the same thing happens. I was using Firefox when it started. It is making it impossible to do research for school. It's AWFUL. I have done everything my friends told me to do to fix it and nothing works. And one of my friends suggested this site. I was told you could look at my Hijackthis log. I ran hijackthis and I have the info from the notepad file it opend after I clicked scan. And this is it:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks.

GMER is not working for me. It slows my computer to a crawl and when I finally get the correct box unchecked and hit scan it goes into "not responding" and my whole computer freezes. I have redownloaded it several times from both links. Same result. I have the first two steps done. Any ideas on how to make GMER work?

Hello

My name is gringo and I will be Helping you from this point forward

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes unless I tell you so.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

If you have not done so please Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Here is the first thing I would like you to do.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Thank you Gringo. Combofix ran without any issues. I am still being redirected when I click links, but now almost always it redirects me to Gomeo.com if that helps you any.

Blitzblank.

Download BlitzBlank and save it to your desktop. Open Blitzblank.exe

  • Click OK at the warning (and take note of it, this is a VERY powerful tool!).
  • Click the Script tab and copy/paste the following text there:
CopyFile:
"C:\Documents and Settings\elvis\Desktop\explorer.exe" C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
"C:\Documents and Settings\elvis\Desktop\winlogon.exe" C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
"C:\Documents and Settings\elvis\Desktop\explorer.exe" C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\explorer.exe
"C:\Documents and Settings\elvis\Desktop\winlogon.exe" C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\winlogon.exe
  • Click Execute Now. Your computer will need to reboot in order to replace the files.
  • When done, post me the report created by Blitzblank. you can find it at the root of the drive Normaly C:\
