Hi all,

I've been having issues for a week or so now on XP SP3, particularly with Google redirecting and a lot of pop ups, so after a bit of research thought it could be the redirect virus.

I initially had AVG 2011 installed and Spybot S&D. I have since ran all the major free anti-virus programs and all came up with zero infections. Yet the issue still persisted, I then removed AVG and Spybot and installed MS Essentials, this too came up with zero infections.

Then last night I tried to view a video on Youtube (using Firefox) and the page loaded fine apart from no play buttons/volume control etc and the video would not play. Google also started freezing on a blank page so I had to keep closing and reopening the browser window. I then tried to use IE, it has vanished from my PC and I have no idea when this happened, so I tried to download and reinstall. I have now tried this several times and it completes installation according to the wizard but there are no shortcuts or start menu links anywhere, yet there are IE files in my Program Files folder and it shows on Add/Remove programs. I have since removed Firefox and IE and have managed to install Chrome, yet I am still having redirect and freezing issues with Google, as well as new tabs opening without prompting.

I then ran Hijackthis! this came up with a few dodgy processes which I double-checked on various web searches and removed.

Yet still having the same issues and IE still won't install, even through MS Automatic Updates.

I have also noticed some of my standard programs missing such as the XP games folder (solitaire, minesweeper etc) and my calculator.

Does anyone have any ideas what this problem could be and how I could fix this? I am contemplating wiping and reinstalling XP but would rather avoid if I can!

Thanks in advance!

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
