Well, you got told some wrong info. It happens.

Newegg no longer stocks slim IDE/ATAPI drives. Here is one http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Samsung-TS-L632-DVD%C2%B1RW-LightScribe/dp/B003A05HIM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1296265281&sr=8-6

Most any slim IDE/ATAPI drive will do. Sometimes there are electrical adapters to swap over, as well as the exterior door trim.

my experience with cd/dvd roms is that it may be possible for to take the connection off the old drive and put it on the new ,changing out the new with the old so to speak, usually 2 small screws holding them on, worth a try, note this may not be possible if its a sata drive,i have no experience with sata drives

The original is an IDE slim drive, the replacement that was purchased was a SATA. Not going to fly.
