Apparently, I've got some serious malware on my desktop (Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600). My ISP (Time Warner - RoadRunner) has received complaints of mass email spamming from my IP Address and have therefore restricted my internet access. They said that I must remove this virus before they can restore my internet again. I've attached my DDS and I'm trying to attach my GMER as well, but it is saying that the file was too big to upload.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Please take note:

  • If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.
  • If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • If you are unable to perform the steps we have recommended please try one more time and if unsuccessful alert us of such and we will design an alternate means of obtaining the necessary information.
  • If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.
  • If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
  • Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Casey

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

Here is my new DDS. I tried attaching my GMER log again, and it still says the file is too big. So I will just post that in my next reply instead. Is that ok?

Hi-

Go ahead and copy in the GMER report. If it is too big, zip up the report and attach it.

Hi-

Thank for the reports. They did show some problems and one was backdoor trojan. A backdoor trojan allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to continue with the cleanup -

Let's see if we can get rid of some your infections, but before we start that you have two anti-virus programs running (Avira AntiVir Personal & Trend Micro Internet Security). I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as products fight for access to files which are being opened since they need to be checked for viruses. In general terms, the programs may conflict and cause:
False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to multiple products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore, please go to add/remove programs in the control panel and remove all anti-virus programs but one.

Next, download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
  • Double click TDSSKiller.exe
  • Press Start Scan
  • If Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected
  • Click Continue > Reboot now
  • Copy and paste the log in your next reply
Note:A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:\)
Then, download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: how-to-use-combofix

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

How to Temporarily Disable your Anti-virusl

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please copy the "C:\ComboFix.txt" into your reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

In your reply, copy in the contents of the TDSSKiller and ComboFix reports.

I installed ComboFix, but I couldn't download and install Windows Recovery Console because of my lack of internet availability. But I ran the scan anyway and received the log anyway just in case it could work without it. So first, here is my TDSS log.

HI-

Thanks for the two logs. TDSSKiller and ComboFix did find and cure some infections. When I looked at the logs, I noticed you have the ASK Toolbar/Vuze Toolbar installed. Ask has a shady past and is not recommended.
To remove it click"start" on the taskbar and then click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Double click on the "Add or Remove Programs" icon.
A list of installed programs will be "populated" (this may take a bit of time).
In the list find Ask Toolbar & Vuze Toolbar, click on each entry in turn, and select "remove":

Also, your logs show that you are using peer-to-peer (P2P) or file-sharing programs like uTorrent and LimeWire.

These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world, the cyber crime has grown to an enormous business and any means is used to infect personal computers and to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject - Risks of File-Sharing Technology

It is pretty much certain that if you continue to use P2P programs, you will get infected again.

I would recommend that you uninstall uTorrent and LimeWire, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

Back to your infections-

First, please run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)[/b]
  • Click on the Update tab and click the Check for Updates button.
  • When the update is finished, click on the Scanner tab.
  • Select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Next, we need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from here:
  • Main Mirror
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Change the "Extra Registry" option to "Use SafeList"
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them into your reply:
  • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
  • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

In your reply, please copy in the MBAM report and the two OTL reports. NOTE - Once you have posted a reply, do not go back and edit in more information since the new information might get missed. Place the new information in its own reply.

Hi-

Your computer appears to free on any infections. I suggest you inform the RoadRunner folks that you are infection free and ask them to restore your access. Let me know how it goes.

They said that my computer still has the virus. I'm a little skeptical however if this is just some assumption. Because they claimed that the ONLY way to get rid of this virus was to reformat your computer. I don't really believe that, but oh well. They've restored my internet, but only if the computer that has the "virus" is not connected to the internet. It's better than no internet at all I suppose...

Thank you for your time though, I really appreciate it. I've never had anyone try to help me with a virus that much. Also, those scans have really made my computer go way faster. =) Thanks again

Hi-

Did the RR help desk have you connect your computer to their network before they made their determination that you were still infected? Do you have more than this computer connected to RR via your cable modem?

Let's do some more looking-

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)
In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

Next, please download MBRCheck by clicking here and save it to your desktop.
  • Be sure to disable your security programs.
  • Double click on the file to run it (Vista and Windows 7 users will have to confirm the UAC prompt).
  • A window will open on your desktop.
  • If an unknown bootcode is found you will have further options available to you, at this time press N then press Enter twice.
  • If nothing unusual is found just press Enter.
  • A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.txt should appear on your desktop.
  • Please post the contents of that file in your next reply.

In your reply, please copy in the RKU report and the MBRCheck report, and let me know about the above questions..
