I've had a rootkit on my Vaio laptop for over twenty days now, and a foreign drive has been downloaded onto my computer. I use Kaspersky, which prompts me with warnings, almost every time I use my computer, about rootkits, recommending a disinfection procedure (but of course it doesn't work). I have recieved two different rootkit warnings, but I've only recorded the name of the first; the warning says, "Detected active malicious software. / Virus: MEM:Rootkit.Win32.TDSS.fa / Location: System Memory."

Overall, the computer's performance isn't terrible (in fact it was worse before*), but I am experiencing some uncommon errors such as a "Generic Host Win32" error (something to that effect), and frequent redirects when clicking on search engine results. Also, I'm getting frequent warnings from Kaspersky about viruses entering my computer.

I've run DDS and created a log, which is pasted at the bottom of this post. (I also tried to run GMER, but my computer crashed with each trial. However, I may have a 64-bit version of Windows; to be honest, I don't know how to figure that out.)

Thanks in advance. You guys are really helpful!

* When I first became aware of the rootkit, I was experiencing more numerous and concerning errors. At that time I wrote a text document explaining them, and in case that might be of interest to you I have included it below:

During the last two days I've been experiencing some concerning errors. I have a Sony Vaio laptop which runs Windows XP.

Errors:

1) I use Kaspsersky virus protection software, and each time I reboot my computer I get the same warnings from it: The one says, "Your computer security is at risk / Full scan is required"; the other is a prompt that tells me of a rootkit that has been discovered: "Detected active malicious software. / Virus: MEM:Rootkit.Win32.TDSS.fa / Location: System Memory."
It recommends a disinfection procedure: "Do you want to perform...? / Yes, disinfect with reboot (recommended)." I do this, it takes about fifteen minutes, and my computer reboots, but I inevitably get the same messages.

2) After starting the disinfection procedure, the Start Menu, Task Bar, and seemingly all windows revert to a Classic Windows style (not XP). (They are also blue, but I believe that is due either to XP's default blue borders or my own personalization.)

3) Using the System Configuration Utility, I tried multiple times (on multiple reboots) to switch the reboot method to "Diagnostic," but when I pressed "Apply" there was a long pause and finally an error message that said something like, "... You may have to log on as an administrator to make these changes." I am an administrator.

4) After starting the disinfection procedure, seemingly all programs cease to initiate, including a simple Notepad text documents, Internet Explorer, and the System Configuration Utility.

5) I get redirects often when I click on the links on search results pages (using Dogpile and Google). This is unusual, especially because the links are to sites by Microsoft, Purdue, and other trustworthy entities.

Hello,

I hope this gets to you soon enough. I apologize that I've only just now seen your replies. Yes, I would still like your help if it works for you.

I'll send this post alone so that it gets to you as soon as possible, but in the mean time I'll be working on getting the logs you've requested.

Thankyou for your replies!

A.B.

When I try to run RKUnhooker, I get a warning from Kaspersky saying, "This application is trying to download a new driver in a hidden way onto ...." (Something like that.) This is normal? It's a bit concerning.

Here are the logs you requested.

I don't think I've encountered any more problems than what I've already described, except that all sounds (except for computer beeps) and all video "skip" (they have very short and frequent breaks).

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

It might be of interest to you that, in fact, I'm experiencing fewer errors now than before. For example, I haven't seen the "Generic host Win32" error, Kaspersky's rootkit prompts, or the "Classic Windows reversion."

I still would like to see the reports so I know that it is clear

I also don't see anything you have run that would have removed this so it is better to run these scans so we know you are clean

I'm not sure what report you're referring to, but I did realize that I forgot your direction about not attaching logs, so here is my second "Attach" file (is that what you meant?), copied and pasted.

Also note that this log does not show the drive that was secretly downloaded, Q:\, which does show up in the "Computer" folder, but I have no authority to access it.

I'll hold off on running ComboFix until I know you've seen what you want to see.

ComboFix is giving me this prompt:

Click 'Yes' if this is a WINDOWS XP *HOME EDITION* machine.

My system is the Windows Media Center Edition. The page "A Guide and tutorial on using combofix" says that for this version of Windows, one should download "Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2," but that doesn't help me to answer this particular question.
