OK. For starters.

Symtoms: Annoying pop-ups...constantly.

The only anti-virus/malware package that tells me I have ADW_SLAGENT.A is TrendMicro OfficeScan. It tells me its been successfully cleaned after a malware scan but as soon as I connect to the net and scan again it has returned - EVEN after I have turned off System Restore and run OfficeScan again, SO THIS DOES NOT WORK!..well not on its own anyway. Recently, I am unable to open and use TrendMicro OfficeScan - this may be because I also tried to terminate a program using Process Explorer - which result in the entire system freezing up. OfficeScan used to open automatically on a reboot, but no longer...When I try to open it from the program directory I get: "OfficeScan Client not running. Please start the client program and try again".

The only program that informs me of the presence of Timesink and Istbar.dotcomToolbar is SpywareDetector (I only have a free version). The Registry Key locations for these last two seem to be hidden. The C:\WINDOWS\p2esocks_1047.dll (Istbar) file exists but cannot be deleted manually. SpywareDetector also finds WinFixer and Reliablestat.com cookies.

In the registry editor I deleted acknowledged.mc2, uninstall.exe, navpmc: These were listed under 'Data". I have searched for ADW_SLAGENT and for the subkeys listed at, http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...re.slagent.html , and found nothing.

An Ad-aware search only produce 1 to 4 cookies with every search, but interestingly the search process freezes if I choose to do a full system scan, so I have to do it in parts.

Spybot, Housecall, Panda, Bit Defender & McAfee AVERT Stinger identified nothing wrong with with my system.

I think I may have fixed the problem in my second post, thanks to some google searching:

In C:\WINDOWS\system32, I found these:

twjqlo.dat
twjqlo.exe
twjqlo_navps.dat

ewido didn't like the look of these critters...

1. I rebooted in safe mode <F8 on boot>,

2. Then I changed the file extension .exe to .txt.

3. Reststarted in normal mode.

4. Now I could delete these files in Windows Explorer & empty the Recycle Bin.

So far I've had no more problems...but I'm not certain it's the entire issue fixed (see first post). My computer is still slow.

Thanks Grinler.

I went through all of those steps before my initial post.

I think I just did something which I'm not sure was a good idea...Firstly I deleted several Search Assistant sub-keys from the registry...only to discover that I could no longer use search under the windows start menu. Then I found this information: http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/windo...earch-assistant. I carried out the tasks listed there to reinstall search assistant, upon which pop-ups started appearing out of nowhere, so I am back to tracking down some sort of spyware/adware infection, this time with apparently no way of searching for files/folders.

Do you know what this is for? Belongs I believe to MARX CryptoTech LP.?

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: MARX_DEV.DLL

Click on start, settings, control panel and double-click on add/remove programs. From with add/remove program uninstall the following if they exist:

Spyware Detector

Then,

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

O23 - Service: SpyDetectSVC - Max Secure Software Technologies - C:\WINDOWS\system32\SpywareDetectorSVC.exe

Reboot your computer and post a new log.

MARX_DEV.DLL is associated with a hardlock dongle that is required for software that I use.

I have unistalled SpywareDetector.

I don't appear to have any problems with popups anymore.

My main issue now is not being able to use search in windows, which is very annoying. In Registry Editor, under Search Assistant key, all I have is (Default) and Actor (rover.acs)...When I go to Start Menu > Search, the search companion comes up in the left hand pane, but the only thing in it is the dog (rover?). Is it possible to export a required key/sub-key from another machine and import it onto mine, or am I 'barking' up the wrong track?

Here's my log anyway:
