I have a windows vista sp2 32-bit machine that I cannot run combofix on due to no access to the root of the windows drive (c:\). Explorer shows the c:\ drive with no capacity like it was an unformatted volume. I tried to access it from a another xp machine with the drive on a usb to sata adapter, the result was the same. I have done everything I can think of. I installed mbam to the d:\ drive since it would not install to c:\ and updated it by copying the definition file from another machine since networking is totally nonfunctional. Ran a full scan, it removed some common malware but the system is still toast. Rkill runs but fails no matter what I name it. From the cmd prompt I tried to use icacls commands like c:\ /grant administrators:f and always it returns access is denied. I could go on and on I have tried everything I can think of to no avail. The machine may actually be clean at this point but until I get the root access to c:\ drive back and run combofix im not confident that the root kit component is gone. What took the machine down in the first place was the latest iteration of what call itself win antivirus back in the day. I knocked it down enough manually deleting files until I could get mbam installed. I just cant get root access back.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

To clarify a few things here: you have booted the computer, windows runs, but when you access windows explorer, the c:\ partition (on which windows is installed) has access denied and shows as unformatted?

Are you using drive encryption, are you logged on as administrator?

Correct, explorer shows c: the windows volume with no information about used and free space like it was not formatted. I have enabled the administrator account so I can log on that way. From explorer/computer clicking on c: results in access is denied. The volume is not encrypted. Several startup programs have problems like the hp adviser for example, the errors all have to do with file access problems. The was I am able to run any of these tools is by running them from the d: drive. D: is not a partition of the primary drive the laptop actually has 2 physical drives in it. Networking is nonfunctional so all these tools have go be brought on to the machine via usb drive.

See if you can run this:

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version of the tool.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller. will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Only if that will not run, try this:

We need to scan the system with this special tool:

* Please download and save:

* Unzip it and place Junction.exe in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).
* Go to Start => Run... => Copy and paste the following command in the Run box and click OK:

cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt

A command window opens starting to scan the system. Wait until a log file opens. Copy and paste the log in your next reply.
