This laptop has recently demonstrated problems when re-booting or shutting down. Blue screen states fatal error, process terminated. I'm not sure if this is an operating system problem, malware problem, virus, age of machine, ... I'm really reaching here....

Gringo,

I have downloaded and run the scans as per your instructions. During the DDS scan I got the following: Generic Host Process for Win32Services has encountered a problem and needs to shut down,...etc. Another window came up asking if I wanted to report this problem to Windows, I replied "yes", the report was sent. I saved the logs. After the Unhooker scan I again saved the log. I copied all reports into this post window and clicked "Post" only to find that my machine would no longer connect to the internet. I had saved the 3 logs onto the desktop of the machine that we are trying to fix, so I copied them onto a zip drive and reproduced them here. I am sending them via the desktop machine you have just help me to repair!

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo,

I disabled my antivirus program - Avast - prior to running Combofix. However, during the beginning of the scan, I got a message from Avast with the following: A suspicious hidden object (ROOTKIT) had been detected on your system. This may be a sign of malware infection. It is recemmoneded to remove the object immediately. Filename MBR\\.\physicaldrive0. I closed the window without taking any action. Another warning from Avast asking to remove MBR\\.\Physicaldrive0 MBR:TDL4, again I closed the window. Next I got a message: Combofix detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to rebot. I clicked ok. I got the bluescreen:
A problem has been detected and Windows needs to shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
The end-user has manually generated the crashdump.
If this is the first time you are seeing this stop screen error, restart your computer. If this screen appears again,...etc.

Technical information ***
Stop: 0x000000E2

I manually restarted the maching by turning off and on. Combofix ran again with no interruptions. The log is below.
After I post this I will attempt to poke around on the internet and see how that goes. Also I intend to turn off the machine and/or restart to see if that goes normally. I will post those results at the bottom of this page below the combofix log.

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Gringo,

So I ran Combofix and sent the report above, then played around on the internet and ran a few programs - the machine seemed to behave ok. I used the "Start" button to shut down. It looked like a normal shut down, "Windows is saving your settings",etc., then the following Blue Screen: "Stop: C000021a {Fatal System Error} The Windows Logon Process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0x00000000 0x00000000) The system has been shut down." I used the power button to turn the machine off.

When I try to turn it back on, I see the Dell bios screen with only 2 keyboard options, F2 for Setup, F12 for Boot Menu. This screen lasts only for 3 - 5 seconds, then a blank screen with only a blinking cursor. (At this point I become the curser) It will go no further, does not respond to the keyboard, alt-ctrl-del has no effect. I have to turn off and re-start the machine and quickly choose one of the two options. F2 will take me into setup, which I did, but I changed nothing, just looked. After "Quit without saving changes?" I'm at the blank screen. F12 lists several boot options -- internal hard drive, CD, etc., and Diagnostics. So for fun I went into Diagnostics. All tests were successful -- memory, graphics, etc., until it returned "No diagnostics partition found. Need Dell Drivers and Utilities CD". (I'm pretty sure that disappeared long ago) Insert and click OK or Cancel to exit." Back to the blank screen upon exit.

Needless to say, I have not run TDSKiller -- the machine will not boot. (I am responding to you from the machine you straightened out for me last week) Now what?????

Gringo,

I cannot get to the screen to make any of the choices you described. I get a quick Dell bios screen, that's it. I'm searching on Dell's site for similar problems peculiar to my model.

Hello

if you don't find anything then try this

Burn recovery console cd

  • Download recovery_console_cd.zip file to your drive and extract it to its own folder (c:\recoverycd for example).
  • Download floppy disk setup package xp Pro for your operating system (XP Pro) and save it to the folder you extracted the zip to.
  • Rename the floppy disk setup package to Bootdisk.exe.
  • Insert a blank cd into your burner.
  • Double-click the RecoveryCD.bat file and follow the prompts to burn a cd that will allow you to boot to the recovery console.

Boot into recovery console

  • insert the cd that we made into cd player
  • restart the computer
  • screen will say "Windows set up" just wait
  • at the welcome screen press "R"
  • type 1 to enter c:\windows
  • type in the following and press enter
  • fixmbr
