Sorry if I caused anyone some grief, I am not modifying anything on my system. I also forgot to mention, that it seems as though some settings that I changed, didn't stay after log off and reboot.

Another irksome issue is some items in the Start up tab in msconfig, are checked but their icons don't show in the task bar.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

If I have caused grief, let me apologize. I inserted the logs as instructed by boopme from the previous steps.

Some of my issues are:
some application settings that I change, don't stay changed after log off and reboot.
Items in the Start up tab in msconfig, are checked but their icons don't show in the task bar.

I get these two error upstart up.
Generic Host Process for Win32 Services
encountered a problem and needed to close.

this is the data this error report contains,
szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 0.0.0.0 szModName : unkown
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

this is the technical information about the error report,
C:\DOCUME~1\John\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER????.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\John\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER????.dir00\appcompat.txt

SVChost.exe - Application Error
The Instruction at "0x7c9100e8" Referenced memory at "0x00000010", The memory could not be
read.

I do not know if it makes any difference but just before I started this process 2 weeks ago I installed Win 7 on the f: Drive.

I had no problems running any of the applications.

OK the following is the DDS.txt report:

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I had problems running combofix. It told me to uninstall AVG so I did. combofix kept saying that AVG and Windows security Essential was still running. I went to control panel/administrative/services and stopped NSE, couldn't locate any AVG service to stop so I let combo fix run anyway.

I will let you know how the computer is running after I restart.

Below is the combofix log:

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

I will do that as soon as I can log back into XP, I am adding this reply from WIN 7 boot.
When I try to log on to XP boot and select user john I get a message that I will need to activate this copy of before being able to use it. I then press ok to continue and I get a message that says this copy is already activated and get sent back to the user log on screen. I did this 3 times and it seems an endless loop, the results of which is I just can't log on. So unless it would be effective to run TDSSKiller from this Win 7 boot I need help getting back into XP. Thanks

Good morning Gringo, I shut my computer off and restarted, I can access XP in safe mode, and safe mode with command prompt, but not safe mode with networking.
I also can not boot up from last known good or directory services restore mode. So if I need to I can download applications here save them and then access them from XP let me know what the next step is. Though I would assume it is to get the system to boot and activate.

I had a lot of problems with my hardware about 4 years ago, trying to use a RAID configuration and I was either restoring or re-installing XP so often that I apparently ran out of install according to MS and each time I reinstalled after that I was forced to call to get it activated, so I found a hack called antiwpa.dll and followed the programs instructions and installed and until now has caused me now problems. That could be why I am getting this need to activate, do it now press ok, and getting this is already been activated loop.

I have been and am major sick, so if I have not been congenial, I apologize.

I used Windows explorer to locate the application and upon execution, it said it was going to restore a backup registry and the only one there was 1/22/11 so I let it finish restoring and then it said to reboot, so I did, Situation same no change can enter safe mode and safe mode with command line, but any other access gives me the needs to be activated, and then while logging on says already activated sending me back to the user menu.
