elise025 has helped me in the past - hopefully she has time to help me with this one:

Problems:

1) Computer RAM all being used rapidly. About 33-50% of RAM in use as soon as I turn on.
I have more internet bandwidth than I'm used to, don't know if much of that problem is because I'm running more programs at one time than I could previously.
But even if I only run a few simple windows in a browser, it seems that the browser's use of memory keeps going up way beyond where I used to see it.

2) I'm getting AppHang B1 Errors all the time with IE, and have to close programs/browsers and restart them, or sometimes have to reboot.

3) Was getting BEX errors all the time, but stopped using Chrome browser and the BEX errors stopped.

4) All sort of IE 7.0 problems.

a) Frequent small box with red "X", stating that "Internet Explorer cannot open website ABC and will close" and when I click "OK", I lose that page.
Used to happen rarely, now happening frequently.
Not experiencing that with Firefox.

B) IE turning black, and I can't close it.(Could be when my RAM is in the red zone on the Windows Sidebar CPU Meter Gadget).

SUSPECTED MALWARE - when this happens, sometimes there is superimposed on the black screen a page I see sometimes as a popup from hxxp://d3.zedo.com/jsc/(ETC.).
NOTE: I added the "(ETC.) - there are more alphanumeric symbols in the original.

It is a mostly white page - in the middle of the page in red is a button "DOWNLOAD" and on the right of that button is a green button "PLAY NOW".
(I took a screenshot of this, in case you want to see it).

Although I never click on anything I'm not sure of, this could be the exception - I was trying to watch a web TV channel, and a legitimate site told me I needed to download a (legitimate I think) player, and I think I clicked on this, then changed my mind fairly rapidly and closed it.
It could be a legitimate player, but it could've popped up coincidentally when I was planning to download the player - I think I was running several windows simultaneously and doing multiple tasks at the time.

5) At the head of the DDS.txt log, I notice "SP: Windows Defender *enabled* (Updated) {D68DDC3A-831F-4FAE-9E44-DA132C1ACF46}"
This is disturbing, because I was sure that I'd disabled it (because it was doing updates without my permission).

6) In general, computer running slowly at all tasks, even when it's just rebooted.

I did an Avast Free Boot Scan, which found nothing, immediately before creating these logs.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Casey - Thanks for responding.

I am still having the problems described.

"If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far."

All of that is in my original post, which was only posted 6 days ago, along with all the logs you're requesting.

Hi Blixx,

Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note - if you get the following warning, just ignore: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Click on Cancel, then Accept.

regards, Elise

As noted in my OP - "NOTE - Tried to Attach the ark.txt file, got this message:
"Error This file was too big to upload"
The file is 1.15 MB

Let me know if you'd like me to email this to you.

Hi again Blixx, no need for the ark.txt, since we have the RKU log.

COMBOFIX
---------------
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\Combofix.txt in your next reply.

regards, Elise

Odd things happening

.E.g., 2 days ago my Windows Live Messenger showed me the avatars of my Contacts as usual in the vertical Messenger interface, but when I'd open a Chat window to one of my Contacts their avatars had disappeared.
Had to do a System Restore to fix it.

Things happen slower than they should - all activities.

If I use the Chrome browser, I get BEX errors.

I get APPHANG errors periodically with browsers (IE especially), and with IE I get SYNTPE errors which notifies me that special features of my Touchpad are disabled (scrolling using my finger on the touchpad), shortly followed by RUNDLL error, and I have to reboot to get the Touchpad working properly again.

Periodically different functions will stop responding (browsers; WMP; Notepad) and I have to close them and reopen, or usually, reboot.

I have more bandwidth than ever before, so I'm performing more functions than ever before involving streaming etc., and my Memory is high usage - about to upgrade from 3k to the max of 4k.
But I suspect that my browsers - IE, Firefox (and I would also use Chrome if not for the BEX errors) are using much too much memory - I'll log into a few websites, and the memory keeps climbing and climbing, making me suspect that something is running that is grabbing memory unnecessarily.

Also my file settings are always changing - inside the file folders, Date Modified is what I usually check, but sometimes something else is checked when I next go into the file (Name, etc.).
The View option is frequently changed from my setting also.

Did all of these logs I've posted not reveal any problems?

PS - I did try uninstalling/reinstalling my Touch Pad drivers, but it didn't solve the problem.

Can you reboot in safe mode with networking and see how things are running there?

Not sure what that is.

I know how to get into safe mode.
And just before I did my first logs in this thread, I did an Avast Boottime Scan, which found nothing.

Not sure what "with networking" means?
Get online while in safe mode?
