Back in September, we were infected by the Security Suite virus, which almost completely disabled our computer. From a friend, we got information on how to run SpyBot so our computer would at least return to a working state. Then we ran lots of other anti-malware products, including: MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware, and Avast. Several problems were found and removed.

Later, we kept getting redirects after doing Google searches. We often had a difficult time backing out of the redirected page back to the main Google search page. So we tried getting deeper into the problem and ran all the malware/spyware removal programs again, all of which turned up nothing. Then we tried the steps on this site: hxxp://www.2-viruses.com/how-to-fix-google-results-hijacker-google-redirect-virus-problem. We checked our Hosts file and removed a couple of problems (recommended from a friend).

We ran Hijack this and got a log file a while ago. We ran Trend Micro Rootkit Buster, which came up clean.

Here are some links from an older redirect we got a while back, maybe this will help?

My intended Google search: hxxp://www.google.com/search?q=time+warner+cable&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
redirect: hxxp://itcg.21897.information-seeking.com/jump1/?affiliate=itcg&subid=21897&terms=time%20warner%20cable&sid=Z029044496%40EzXxQjM1kzMy81MwkjMfZTYfRTOx81M3UzNzMTO4ITM&a=vgpt&mr=1&rc=0
end page where we landed unintentionally: hxxp://shop6-1.forless.com/?pid=759&src=itcg-21897&keywords=time+warner

I just did a Google search trying to remember the name of the original virus, and clicked from Google onto a Bleeping Computer page, but was redirected to a STOPzilla site. At a loss for what else to try. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks.

We are still having redirects from Google. Lately the redirects have been to a page that says "Reported Attack Page" and lists an IP address and instructions on how to fix the fake problem. Here's the warning and the link to where it takes us.

Hi,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

My name is Shannon and I will be working with you to remove the malware that is on your machine.

I apologize for the delay in replying to your post, but this forum is extremely busy.

Please don't make any further changes or run any other tools unless instructed to. Additional changes may hinder the cleaning of your machine.

When asked to copy logs or reports into your reply, please copy them directly into your reply. Do not include them in quotes. Do not attach them unless asked to do so. In Notepad, please turn off Word Wrap under the Format menu.

Please Track this topic - On the top right on this tread, click on the Option button, and, in the drop-down list, click on 'Track this topic'. Under Subscription Information, click on 'Immediate Email Notification' and then click on the Proceed button at the bottom.

Please give me some time to look over your log. I will post the reply as soon as possible.

Hi-

We need to get another scan -

Need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from here:
  • Main Mirror
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Change the "Extra Registry" option to "Use SafeList"
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them into your reply:
  • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
  • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
In your reply, please copy in the contents of the two OTL reports.

Hi-

Thank you for the logs. I noticed from your logs that you are running two anti-virus software products - Lavasoft Ad-Watch Live & Avast - and two firewalls - Norton Internet Worm Protection & ZoneAlarm Firewall. You only need one of each. I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as products fight for access to files which are being opened since they need to be checked for viruses. In general terms, the programs may conflict and cause:
False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to multiple products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore, please go to add/remove programs in the control panel and remove all anti-virus programs but one.

Next, we need to run an OTL Fix.

Hi, thanks for your quick response. My wife and I don't recall installing Lavasoft Ad-Watch Live or Norton Internet Worm Protection. We thought were just running Avast and ZoneAlarm. I went to Add/Remove, and neither Lavasoft Ad-Watch Live nor Norton Internet Worm Protection are in the list. Ad-Aware is in the list, and we remember installing that, but I didn't think that's considered anti-virus protection or a firewall. I didn't run the OTL Fix yet because I don't know what to do about the first problem.

Hi-

Ad-Watch comes in with Ad-Ware these days. Go ahead and uninstall Ad-Aware, and then run the OTL Fix.

OK, removed Ad-Aware and ran OTL Fix. The first time I tried I got this error: Access violation at address 005CC7ED in module 'OTL.exe'. Read of address 00000000.

I ran it again (Was I supposed to check "Scan all users" again?) and it seemed to work.

Still getting sporadic redirects - most of them lately have been "Reported Attack Page" things that try to make you think you're visiting a dangerous site. Every once in a while I get a popup that says "you're almost finished installing XMark", which I've never seen before. Anyway, here's the new OTL:

Hi-

Have you had any redirects since running the OTL Fix?

Hi Shannon,

Haven't had any redirects since the latest OTL fix, but there have been days where we haven't gotten any and then they crop up again. Is there anything else to do now or just wait and see?

Do I still have the Norton Worm Protection running? I've avoided using this computer for any shopping or bills since the problem started - is it safe to use for those types of things?

Hi-

Why don't we just leave this open for a few days.

The last time I looked the Norton Worm Protection was running but was not enabled. You might open him and see if he is enabled or not. If not, go ahead and enable him.

I don't see any more infections on your computer. You are probably save to shop and pay bills, but there are no guarantees.
Shannon
