If your browser is Firefox you can use the 'Flashgot' plugin to download video and music, including youtube.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flashgot/

And 'VLC player' will play them.

I use Internet Explorer.

Can I download VLC player the in IE?

Is it free of spyware, adware etc then and can you trim, take photos etc with it like you can in real player?

Also does it contain a codec pack? (I managed to delete a load of installed codec .. see my other thread!)

Yes you can download VLC through ie, no it does not contain spyware or ad ware also no it does not take photos nor can you trim with it, but it plays just about every audio and video format know to man which is much better than real player can do, it also doesn't require any codec packs.

One of his other topics that is about him deleting codecs could be useful to this topic so I added it: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic373718.html/page__pid__2096146#entry2096146

VLC and GOM player (http://www.gomlab.com/eng/GMP_download.html) are probably the two best free media players.

Unfortunately 'vlc' doesn't download youtube or videos (you can download it with any browser) .
But 'Flashgot' only works with 'firefox'.

Another option that might work for you is 'songbird' by mozilla
http://getsongbird.com/

Once installed you'll need this add-on to be able to download youtube etc......

YouTube Downloader is the best Software that can download YouTube videos, and other sites. KeepTube is a good site that requires no software to download and is safe. Sometimes however KeepTube doesn't download unfortunately, but YouTube Downloader is good.

Also, if you're looking to convert media and photo files into another format, I recommend Format Factory, which is safe and fast.

YouTubeinmp4 can download and convert videos to mp4. Here is more information on this tool: http://www.videoconverterfactory.com/tips/youtubeinmp4-downloader.html

I know vlc also allows you to download and play kinds of formats of videos but it always come across kinds of errors somehow while downloading.

You don't have to go for different media player each & every time. You can simply download the video files from YouTube in Mp4 format & feel free to play them on any media player whether it's real player or VLC media player. Perhaps, this might help.
