Pasting in additional information from another post. ~ OB

Hi everyone. For several days now I have been struggling with a Google redirect virus. I was running Avast and Adaware before but because my Zonealarm firewall was due for renewal I removed them and went with just Zonelabs Extreme Security. 2 days later I had the infection.

Running a Zonealarm scan picked up one infection then, and was supposed to have removed it. Immediately afterwards running Malwarebytes 6 were found and supposedly removed. The virus was still there. Avast rootkits user defined scan yesterday picked up 123 but would not remove them. A boot time scan with Avast picked up nothing and a safe mode scan with Malwarebytes also picked up nothing but the virus is still there.

So I need to try one last thing before re-installing an OS - Combofix..... but it recommends that I should only do this if asked to do so, presumably because of log file interpretation. (O.S. currently XP)

So my question is can anyone help with this problem and with running Combofix pls

End of added information. ~ OB

Hi hope all this makes some sense

I have tried running AVAST (which at one stage picked up 6 instances, but the action to remove them was greyed out.), Malwarebytes, which could only pick up any viruses in normal mode (not in Safe mode), but again failed to remove it and Ad-Aware, which I have now removed because Avast reported a problem with aawservice.exe.
And Zonealarm... which let it through in the first place and only picked up one problem on a super scan.

The computer is currently running XP and I could upgrade but I would like to solve the problem really, just because.... for the same reason you are helping here I guess.

I can't find a way to send the GER report because it is 527k and reports an error either copied to here or attached as a file.

Thanks for your help.

Good evening. :)

I would like to solve the problem really, just because.... for the same reason you are helping here I guess.

I'm here because a very severe case of halitosis prevents me leaving the house and there's nothing decent on the TV. I didn't expect to meet another sufferer here - small world ain't it!

Work through the two steps below, in the order that i've posted them and let me have the required information and we'll take it from there.

Download HostsXpert by FunkyToad from here and save it to your Desktop.

You will need to extract the file(s):
Right click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All...
In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish

You should now see the HostsXpert folder - open it and double click HostsXpert.exe
  • In the top left hand corner of the new window, ensure that the button says "Make ReadOnly?"
If it says "Make Writable?", click it and it should change to the above.
  • Click on Restore MS Hosts File.
  • In the confirmation window, click on OK.
  • Finally, click the button mentioned above to make it read "Make Writable?".

Pay a visit to the ESET Online Scanner.

  • Click the ESET Online Scanner button, read the info in the new window, check the appropriate box and click Start.
  • Accept the ActiveX download, and allow it to install.
  • Once this has been completed, you will see the Computer Scan settings page - ensure that you UNCHECK the "Remove found threats" box and then click Start.
  • The virus signature database will now need to be downloaded, so don't forget to instruct your firewall to permit it if it asks.
  • The above will take a little time, so now is a good time to fire up the kettle and open the biccies.
  • Once the scan has completed you will be shown the results - assuming that the scanner has found anything.
  • Click List of found threats and then Export to text file... and save the log somewhere convenient.
  • You can then close out the scanner - don't bother uninstalling it as you may need to use it again.
  • Please post the contents of this file in your next reply, or let me know that nothing was identified.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

As there has been no response for five days this thread is now closed.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.
