I'm a "newbie" Java programmer and can't think of something to make. I want somewhat of a challenge, and something that's pretty cool. Any ideas? :)

That does promise to be a very good resource, Groovicus. It just became the first site I have ever bookmarked on the first time I found out about it. Add my thanks to the pile.

It kind of states the obvious, but I think the best way to come up with an idea is to figure out something that really bugs you just about every day. Whether it's something silly like a new task list manager or something more involved, you are bound to be more emotionally invested in finishing the project than you would otherwise. Most of the projects I've developed on the side were a result of getting annoyed with an existing application or lack thereof. Good luck!
