CryptoDan, here's the original problem statement - guess I posted it in the wrong forum. Thanks for the re-direct:

I have a WinXP "media center" laptop w/ SP3 (Dell XPS M140). It picked up a bad bug, I believe when connected to a router which had another infected machine on at the same time. I was a bad boy and didn't change my router login/pw (Netgear) from the default, and it was hijacked and installed bad stuff on my machine. Now, when I do a >ipconfig /all it shows the DNS address and secondary as known malware addresses in the Ukraine (!) These addresses are: 93.188.162.241 for primary, and 93.188.160.51 for secondary. My machine pops up blank windows with "epoclick" at the top, from time to time, and it runs slower, and it will not let me go to certain websites, like e.g. malwarebytes, or windows update - basically, the sites that could help me! I've changed all my financial login/pw info and kept the new info off of this computer.

What I've done:
By connecting to another machine and then using FastLynx I've been able to load onto my infected machine
* malwarebytes antimalware software
* TFC.exe
* gooredfix.exe
* SmitFraud
* ComboFix
* SecurityCheck.exe
* hijack this

all of which seemed, from my browsings, to be possibly important in cleaning my computer

I also did a hard reset (using the little pin and a paperclip) of my router and then used a Macbook to reset the login and password to something hard to guess. I've confirmed that clean machines connected to my router are not getting infected. A cisco network pro and friend told me he felt sure the laptop was overriding the DNS from the router at this point, and that the router was fine. I'm using another laptop to continue my life, but there is still files on this machine which I do not want to lose as they are not backed up. I'm afraid to simply copy those files onto a clean machine for fear that this nasty bug will follow with them.

Help me Obi Wan!

I then tried to run GMER. I ran for a few minutes, then hung. I waited, since it said it might take " a while". I left the computer running for 20 hours
but it was still hung, and so I did a cold boot. My machine runs very slowly now.The windows task manager says almost all the CPU cycles are going to "system idle process", which seems normal. Yet everything is glacially slow, including moving the mouse.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

We need to create a New FULL OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from here if you have not done so already:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Change the "Extra Registry" option to "SafeList"
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened

Thanks again Kahdah,
I ran OTL, it had me reboot, I cut/pasted the log. Next, note that one symptom of my infection is that it overrides my router and uses an evil DNS server in the Ukraine to route my internet traffic, and this DNS forbids access to many useful sites, including malwarebytes. However, I was able to download MBA from filehippo and install it. The definitions were 32 days out of date and because the infection would not let me access the malwarebytes site, it was unable to update the definitions. I ran it anyway, and it found 4 trojans (1 was a program I use all the time; q.exe (qedit), and 3 others were registry keys) and I removed them as you and MBA instructed. On reboot, I was gratified to see that doing >ipconfig /all that the DNS servers were now the ones I always use - the OpenDNS servers. That's the good news. The bad news is, that it now won't connect to the internet! Hence, I can't post the scan results until that gets fixed. When I try and 'repair' it says that TCP/IP is not enabled. I use an ethernet connection always, to avoid having to tell this infected computer my new secret login/pw for the router (which was how the infection got going in the first place, I think).

Anyway, I'm talking to you from another, clean WinXP laptop (using the same router here at home) and awaiting instructions on how to re-enable access to the web. I have a high speed DSL model and Netgear router and a wire ethernet into the ethernet port on my machines.

Ok try the following:

Follow these steps to use the reset command to reset TCP/IP manually:
Open a command prompt, click Start and then click Run. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box and then press ENTER:
cmd
At the command prompt, copy and paste (or type) the following command and then press ENTER:
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
Then reboot the machine and see if the internet is restored.
Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

Good thinking! Your suggestion indeed recovered my internet connection. I should say, my computer still runs very slow. Even thought the task manager shows most of the time the "system idle processes" taking most of the CPU cycles. It's fully 10-13 minutes from power on till I can get any response at all to my commands. Noticably slower than before the infection. McShield takes a bunch of CPU cycles for the first 10 minutes every time I boot up, but even so, it's just very slow. Probably too slow to live with. The mouse often is unresponsive for variable moments of time. On the cmd line I did >ipconfig /all and noted that all looks OK there. Now I'll post the OTL log after following your earlier instructions...

All processes killed

Next I tried running ESET. I opened a IE window to do this (but left my existing Firefox windows open as well). Follwed your instructions, but after clicking 'start' it ran for a minute or so with initialization downloading virus database, then came back with "unexpected error 101". I tried several times, shutting down malwarebyte antimalware as well, but still got the same error.

That is fine sometimes it fails.
Try the following scanner

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

Didn't work. I clicked on the weblink and it successfully downloaded the program and then went to update. I 'accept' and it starts downloading lots and lots of files, but then then eventually says 'update failed'. When I re-try, it no longer downloads lots of files and straightaway goes to the error message 'update failed'. I'm connected to the internet just fine. I'm not 100% sure my Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise is disabled.... when I start the VirusScan Console, it shows 'access protection' is 'disabled' and 'buffer overflow protection' is 'disabled' but 'on access scanner' is 'enabled' and when I right-click, the little popup box has 'disable' grayed-out so I can't click it.

Please click here to download Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool.

  • Double click on the file you just downloaded and let it install.
  • It will install to your desktop.
  • After that leave what is selected and put a check next to My Computer.
  • Click on the option that says Threat Detection and change it to Disinfect,delete if disinfection fails.
  • Then click on Start Scan.
  • Before it is done it may prompt for action regardless of the setting so choose delete if prompted.
  • When the scan is done no log will be produced.
  • Click on the bottom where it says Report to open the report.
  • Then highlight of of the items found by using ctrl + a on your keyboard to select all or use your mouse to select all then right click and choose copy.
  • This will copy the items that it found to the clipboard you can then open notepad (go to start then run then type in notepad) and choose paste to paste the contents into Notepad.
  • You can save this on the desktop.
  • Post the contents of the document in your next reply.

Note: This tool will self uninstall when you close it so please save the log before closing it.

OK. Your suggestion did get Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool running. It's been running or 5 hours now and is 61% done. However, following your instructions, the 'threat detection' option had most options grayed out, including 'disinfect, delete if disinfection fails'. It ran with option 'prompt if infection found'. I've heard 4 beeps so far in the 5 hours, but none actually give me the option of deleting what was found. The beep is accompanied by a pop up box briefly, which says something about the file found and that it is 'password protected' in each of the cases. I'm worried that I'll wait another 4 hours all for naught, and so I'm posting this reply now.

Sorry it takes so long but I like to be sure nothing is lurking.
The warning are only warning they will not allow you to do anything.
Kaspersky alerts you when it finds password protected archives.

Kaspersky did finish, after 7 hours. When it was about 71% of the way done, my McAfee VirusScan Enterprise suddenly popped up that it found 4 Trojans which it labelled as DNS changers. Maybe they were 'cloaked' somehow until that moment? They were all .dll files. I will post the restuts of the Kaspersky scan (the events that were 'detected', 'not processed', and 'password protected') and also the McAfee finding.

Looks good it only detected previously deleted items in the system restore cache.
Nothing is active.
How are things running?

Open OTL once more and click on run scan at the top.
Post the new log that opens and let me know of any remaining issues.
Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

Hi Kahdah,
Earlier you had me two different OTL scans; one for 'all users'/'safe list', and another which appeared to target the Ukrainian evil DNS servers. Is there any particular check boxes I should address for this run?

Two Problems Still:

1. I still get a box which pops up every session which says a script if not executing and asks whether to wait for it or kill it. I cut/pasted the script it is waiting for below...

Script: https://js2.wlxrs.com/_D/F$Live.SiteContent.Messenger/4.2.59120/release/Microsoft.Live.Core.LocalStorage.FF.js:39

I always elect to kill the script, but it doesn't help with the next problem...

2. My mouse and keyboard response freezes quite often, at least once or twice per minute. And I have to wait maybe 10 seconds before it'll listen to me again. It does seem to keep the keystrokes in a buffer and then does continue on, but something is grabbing my computer and commandeering all attention. I can't tell what it is from just looking at the Windows Task manager. This problem is severe enough that I can't really get work done on this machine until it's fixed. Don't know if it's related to the trojans removed.

I have an 80GB HDD with 27GB still available. When I try to defrag, the computer says I don't need to, so I don't. I notice that there is still bits of older antivirus programs floating around in the logs we generated, in case that's relevant. McAfee AV Enterprise is my "go to" AV program, as that's what Cabrillo College (who bought the machine for me) has as their AV program, but I might be persuaded to switch if you say so.
