I got these gauges and the download and upload bars go up and down every 2 seconds like they are getting throttled.

Every ten to twenty seconds, my cpu bar is going red at 90%. It goes back down after a second. Is this normal or is it bad for my old cpu to be constantly speeding up to high speed and slowing back down? My computer specs are in my profile, HP laptop, 1.6 dual core amd 64 with 4gb ddr2.

If it is bad, could being throttled while downloading/uploading a lot be causing this?

My connection is a verizon aircard in a router for three computers. My old router and card were faster but disconnected and needed rebooting 5 times a day. When downloading and uploading my speed was steady.

My new router and card stay connected forever but aren't as fast. The speeds jump around every second with a difference of about 50kb/s. This is significant since I am in a remote location and move a lot of data.

Advice is appreciated as always.

Your computer is always "talking" to the modem so the internet usage I wouldn't worry about too much unless you start noticing that the internet is slow, or it stays locked at 60kB/s down for extended periods of time.

CPU Usage - what are you doing when that happens? Is it random?

Yea, it's random.

Mostly reading email and news and listening to music and sending and receiving files and sending im's.

I have 74 processes running according to process explorer. I am listening to itunes and have skype, gmail, youtube, a feed reader. Windows indexing is turned off but google desktop is indexing. Spyware Doctor scans a lot. Last.fm is uploading stats.

If it is bad, could being throttled while downloading/uploading a lot be causing this?

All communications are so slow as to take almost forever to a computer. So a computer will literally shut down at times wait for enough data to arrive. Then wake up and process that data.

Laptops would literally go to sleep and wait between your keypresses. Less energy consumed and less heat generated.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it gets real high for long periods of time. It is common for services and programs in the back to take some CPU time.

CPU usage shouldn't be peaking that high, no matter what.
It's normal to have some spikes, but not that high.

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

This particular log looks fine.
System Idle Process (CPU NOT used) is listed at 92.84%

Try to catch it, when CPU spikes and post another log.

3.45 gb free out of 117GB is rather low.
You have to move some stuff out.

Now, re-run QuickStartup and UN-check:

DivXUpdate
iTunesHelper
Adobe ARM
Google Update
SunJavaUpdateSched

Restart computer and keep checking on CPU usage.

I have done that and it I have observed it all day.

I loaded a lot of stuff to get it to happen but it doesn't happen unless I download something big (100 mb or more).

With a lot of programs open and no downloading it has been steady at 50% cpu in the process explorer graph.

As far as my crowded hard drive I have:

Page file: 4 gb

Hyberfil.sys: 3 gb

Music: 70.7 gb

Pictures: 4.8 gb

Video: 3.2 gb

winsxs: 7.5 gb

Google app data: 2.5 gb

Emulator games: 2.79 gb

That stuff isn't going anywhere so it doesn't leave me much wiggle room. I'll try to clean my caches and make space but I don't really want to part with the above so not sure where it's going to come from.

Well, that will be up to you. I just warned you about low disk space and it's none of my concern, if you're going to do something about it it, or not.
